I finally got a new G5 to replay my old 450mhz G4. I teach in a computer lab. G5 is connected to a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060 U Monitor (22" CRT) and a video projector. When I check to mirror the displays in System Preferences so the kids can see what is on my screen the viewable area on the monitor reduces on any resolution setting above 800 x 600. The viewable area on the monitor is about half of the screen.

I tried changing the settings on the monitor. Switching ports on the video card. Adding a PCI video card just for the Video projector. Same result. Viewable screen size on the monitor is reduced when mirrored is checked. Any ideas?

Dual 2.0 G5; Mac OS X (10.4.2); ATI Radeon 9650 XT w/256MB

Do you have the display settings for the second display set to 800x600? Have you checked that?

Yes, the second display, the one for the projector is set at 800 x 600. That is one of the resolutions it can receive. When I set the monitor for any setting above 800 x 600 like 1024 x 768 so I can open iMovie the viewable area dramatically reduces. I did not have this problem on the G4 with an ATI 8500 and 10.39 OS.

I change the resolution for the projector to 1024 x 768 and all is fine. I don't understand why it mattered but it worked. Thank you.

maybe i can shed some light:

mirroring is displaying, pixel for pixel, the exact same image on both screens.

so, if you mirror, you must mirror the same image (in this case, 800x600) on both screens, so the bigger one (the 22" CRT) is reduced to match up with the projector.
