So, I got a text from Rogers today about tethering. (Before we even start +1 point to Rogers for thinking about it and letting me know on 3.0 release day!)

Rogers "rule" is that tethering is cool, provided you have a 1GB or higher data plan. Seems fair. I currently have a 500MB plan, which I never go over (or even get close to) but I can see how 500MB would be insufficent if you started tethering.

What do other cellphone carriers have as the rule?

O2 in the UK allow tethering with an additional monthly subscription of £15 over and above whatever tariff you happen to be on for 3GB of monthly use. I think that costs the same as one of their 3G dongle subscriptions.

I think the Rogers solution is actually very smart. It implies they are actually caring about protecting their customers from exorbitant bills, and at the same time offer a clear, not overly expensive (and probably well tiered) upgrade path.

I know, I'm surprised. Maybe the Rogers management are having an off day - they've missed an opportunity to gouge us on the pricing!

T-mobile doesn't support it, but doesn't do anything about it if you're running it. Have my G1 as a wifi hotspot with the push of a button, and it's awesome.

Optus in Australia are apparently charging $10 for the privilege:

The $9.99 fee — which will become available from June 22, according to an Optus press release — doesn’t get you any extra data, but does let you draw on your existing allowance. A 2GB bundle costs $24.99, and a 6GB bundle is $44.99. Excess data is $0.35 per megabyte. It would seem likely the bundles only last 30 days, but there’s no way of knowing yet — Optus has announced the pricing but isn’t going to reveal the terms and conditions until the service goes live.

I applaud them for now. But this offer is only good for 6 months.
Typical try and get hooked approach. Let's see what they do in the new year.

Hmmm. I wonder about that deal - does it mean that you can only join the plan in the next 6 months, or does it mean that even if you do join now, the offer will expire?
