If reports can be believed, that Rosetta can't run AltiVec, then how was Jobs running Adobe Photoshop at WWDC? Last time I checked, Photoshop used AltiVec and that doesn't seem like something that's a runtime option.

Adobe Photoshop runs on G3s. Therefore, it is not dependent on AltiVec.

Code that will fall back to regular, non-AltiVec calculations can be processed by Rosetta. Only applications that require a G4 or G5 because of AltiVec are the ones that Rosetta cannot process. Smart programmers make AltiVec optional.

Photoshop runs on G3s... ever think about how they did that?

Yup, portions of the app are compiled for each CPU, and the best fit is chosen at run time. Rosetta just said "I'm a G3, honest!" and that chunk of code was run, without AltiVec support.

Wow, sounds a lot like we've been working with Semi-Universal Binaries all along and didn't even know it, huh?

Does it? My copy of CS2 says that it requires a G4 or G5.

I'm trying to resist making a terribly crude joke here.

Maybe CS2 doesn't support the G3, but the previous versions sure did. Was Steve using CS2 in the keynote? Even if CS2 needs a G4, maybe it's not needed for it's Altivec support, but for other things that Rosetta can handle.

For the record, it was definitely Photoshop CS2.
