I've only used it in rental cars since it came out since my car didn't have it. Since we sold that car, and are now carless, no CarPlay for me.

But, if I do buy another car, this would be a requirement. So much better than the stock experiences.

Definitely lots of room for improvement though. Surprised they're not making too much headway on CarPlay.

....maybe they're saving all the "good" stuff for the Apple Car?

I didn't have CarPlay until last September when I bought this Subaru. Honestly it's... fine? The only apps I use are Messages, Maps, Spotify and Audible.

Apple Maps has some quirky UI behavior on CarPlay but it's good enough.

My only issue is when I'm using CarPlay and shut off the ignition—my car immediately switches to radio, which is annoying. I'd much prefer it just turn off the audio entirely. For now I've set my dial to a frequency with no station in the area as a workaround.

We also didn't have CarPlay until we bought our car last October. While shopping, it was more or less a requirement -- though was also standard on the cars we were looking at (Toyota RAV4, Subaru Outback). We pretty much only use it for Maps & Spotify and it works well enough.

The lack of temperature display doesn't bother me too much because being in San Francisco, the temp is pretty consistent year around...basically just sunny & mid/upper 60s or upper 50s/low 60s and foggy...

I've been using it for about 4 years now. It really could be so much better then it is. Maps sucks but has gotten waaaay better. Waze is the only GPS app I'll use.

The new truck I'm buying will have wireless CarPlay which I think will fix a lot of my connectivity issues that I've had over the years.

I have it on one of my vans thanks to Pioneer. Maybe I'll put Mrs T's phone on iOS 15 beta and see what CarPlay looks like on there.

I got pretty excited by Apple's mention of integrating CarPlay more deeply into the screens of future vehicles. Then today I was watching a YouTube channel exploration of the 2023 Honda Accord and was struck by the integration of Google into the infotainment center.

The new "big thing" is future updates. We'll see how well that works for long term ownership if the brain of the system can't be updated over time as well.

Still, for now, for this car platform, Google has established dominance.

Reading around, I see similar situations with other automakers; no clear promise of integration with Apple, or denials.

But GM has apparently gone with Google, and Honda is teaming with GM on a battery platform right now, so they might be in that same OS bed with Google.

Things change, but my initial excitement about a deeply integrated Apple auto OS has been tempered by the nature of market forces.

Yes, Google looks to be winning, I know Ford is set to go in with Google as well. Google charges less up front now, like they did with Maps in the beginning to gain market share. Now Maps API is extremely expensive, auto manufacturers better be careful or they’ll be paying through fees so high they won’t know what to do with themselves if they go all in with Google.

My 2023 GMC is full on Google. It’s pretty nice tbh. It does have wireless CarPlay which is really nice too.
