In Panther, I can 'enter fullscreen' and the whole desktop will be black. I can then set the viewer size to 'normal' within this, and enjoy my movie.

I am also using a new iMac and PM with TIger 10.4.2-and there is no option for this-or it is broken-if I select enter fullscreen, the default viewer size is LARGE-taking up most of the black screen-which is too blown up and grainy for me-when I select the normal, or medium viewer size however, it shrinks as before, along with the black screen, so that I now get to look at the various items on my desktop, as they are now exposed while watching a movie.

is there anything im missing?
