It took me a while to figure out why AAPL was having a $1.75 $3.90 pop up today pre-market.

Apple introduces Boot Camp in beta, allowing users with an XP installation disc to install XP, and choose which operating system to boot on restarts.

It will be a feature in Leopard (10.5), to be previewed at WWDC in August.

Now this is what I like to see - listening to your customers!

Too bad they waited so long - they could have won $13000 in that XP on Mac contest and recouped development costs!

Included Amenities

For your convenience, Boot Camp burns a CD with all the Mac-specific drivers for Windows:
  • Graphics
  • Networking
  • Audio
  • AirPort wireless
  • Bluetooth
  • The Eject key (on Apple keyboards)
  • Brightness control for built-in displays

Hmm, full drivers, eh? I guess that includes 3D?

Good work, Apple.

I love the fact that they install a Startup Disk control panel in Windows.

Interestingly, this allows lossless resizing of the Mac OS X boot partition, something Disk Utility doesn't do. Maybe that feature is still unstable, and that's why it's still beta?

Impressive. I never thought they'd do something like this, but apparently I was wrong. I can't wait to see more Leopard details now.

Why? As long as Microsoft's usual anti-copying software is still in place (and I dont' know why it wouldn't be), this is no different than somebody installing XP on a computer they built. They're still making money on selling Windows to people.

Apple should have released this on the 1st April for a laugh. I can hardly believe this! I doubt I'll ever sully my Mac with a Windows installation, but I know lots of people who have been clamouring for this since the Intel switch.

I cannot for the life of me see why they would do this...

I guess they realize they have a stable but small market share (one that they hope is sizable enough for support from some software companies) and that this will only aid in moving more macs?

But what happens to the macos when adobe realizes that they can stop producing macos compatible software?

The ONLY reason I use apple is for its os...

Edit: Actually, given the anti-trust case going forward this year, apple is hedging its bets that microsoft will lose (and at the same time fail to deliver vista)...

I guess that Leopard will most certainly not include Windows virtualisation as suggested in this thread. *Big sigh of relief*

I was thinking of getting a MacBook Pro, looks like I'll do it now. A friend of mine in real estate has one or two apps that are windoze only, this will be perfect for him.

I wouldn't totally count that out. Here's why. APple needed to do this ASAP. With all these "hack the mac" contests to boot Windows, APple needed to step up and say "this is the best way to do it. It'll work for sure". So, i see it as a stop gap. Virtualization might also be included in Leopard but not being released until WWDC. If Apple can "sandbox" Windows while running it virtually, that would rock!

And you'll be one of many people buying an Intel Mac now. This is going to drive Mac sales pretty heavily. Some people who already have Macs will buy an Intel Mac for work so that they can use their work-related Windows apps more easily, and others who have never had a Mac can buy one now to try out something different, without the risk of not being able to run a familiar OS.

Anyone have a theory as to how a windows virus would effect the mac operating system on the same machine?
