Merry Christmas to all!

Who cares about offense. Only those who want to be offended for the sake of being offended will be offended.

Happy New Year to you all as well!

I deliberately didn't post those two.

But since you opened up that can of worms, here's one more, for everyone's holiday pleasure:

Merry Christmas from (somewhat) snowy Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia, where we are visiting for the holidays.

Re some of the comments above, my own view is that whether you are Christian or not, everyone can enjoy Christmas if you want to. I am probably not on all fours with my Church on this (though I belong to a pretty open minded Church, so I could be wrong on that point) but I personally do not believe that the the benefits of Christmas, or indeed Christianity, depend first and foremost on faith. There are different ways to feel it, and I would never begrudge anyone celebrating Christmas regardless of the particular nature of their faith, or lack of it.

We had a discussion on this in Minecraft. The way I see it, is that there are basically two Christmases. There's Christmas as a modern cultural construct, with the family togetherness and the (secular) music and the gift-giving and the Starbucks Christmas Blend, and then there's Christmas as a religious observation. I call these "Santa Christmas" and "Jesus Christmas."

I celebrate "Santa Christmas." Most of the modern Christmas traditions aren't related to the Christian religion anyway, so it's not like you have to believe in Jesus to celebrate them. I only call it "Christmas" by popular convention — I really don't feel like I'm observing a religious holiday I'm "opposed to," any more than I consider observing Thursday to be statement of faith in Thor. It doesn't bother me enough to make me want to call it something else. I think a lot of people are in this boat. But some nonreligious people aren't, and they celebrate Holiday or Festivus instead.

I haven't been following my RSS feeds the past few days or else I would have shared this in a more timely fashion.

Here's the problem with that: You make it seem like you can completely divorce the roman-greek-pagan aspects of this Christian holiday from its celebration. You cannot. And suggesting that people who don't celebrate simply do not have the desire to celebrate misses an entire point: some people just do not see any reason to celebrate at all. I neither ever want to celebrate Christmas nor do I see its celebration as a normative ideal. So, no, Chinney, it's not that I don't want to celebrate Christmas, I don't, it's that your religions cultural offshoots have no bearing on me and will continue not to.
