My wife was just in a pretty big accident (she's fine and so's the baby, thank goodness) and we think her car's going to be totaled. It was a 97 Honda Civic LX with 72k miles on it. What are the chances we'll get any where close to KBB retail on the car? It was super reliable and it's going to be hard to find a car that's even close to it for the amount we're going to get for it. But KBB retail is $6800 and that would be a good first payment on the car.
I just put a huge amount in my SEP account 2 hours prior to the accident. And we're expecting a baby in less than 3 months. Talk about bad timing! But again, both she and the baby are fine. I'm hitting the bottle, though. If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

Glad to hear their ok. What little I remember from my insurance class in college (8am on MWFs...) is that the chance of getting KBB on your total really depends on what kind of insurance you have. It should be in your insurance policy documents (if you still have them somewhere). I think the word you are looking for is replacement value. If it's straight replacement value you're probably in the green. If there is a formula then it'll start getting tricky. Good luck, and again glad to hear everyone is ok.

Seriously though, that sucks. Nice to see you have a positive attitude about it, if that is possible. |

Glad they're ok, just check with your insurance company. There are lots of different ways that insurance companies calculate reimbursement.

I'm glad to hear mom and baby are fine! Sorry about your lost car though.
Same as others have said. It is so different from policy to policy that one policy at one company is going to be different from another's. In general, you will get a check from your company (or direct deposit) based on the valuation of the car from the adjuster without the damage from this wreck. Well, the other dude was at fault. She was going straight on the main road, he was crossing from a stop signed road. He ran straight into her. HARD. There was a big hole in the engine compartment over the wheel well. Radiator busted. The entire frame of the car was bent. The passenger's side door was crooked when the impact took place on the driver's side. It actually hit in two places - the front fender by the wheel and the rear driver's side. I think the car was hit, spun a bit and hit again in the rear then straightened out. Thank god it was the wheel well and not the door area. If she had been driving a bit faster or he had been driving a bit slower and the impact took place a fraction of a second later, the impact would have been entirely on her door and it could have been a lot worse.

Would it seem wrong if I asked for pictures?

I didn't even think to take them until tonight. I had my 8525 sitting in my car with it's fancy 2 megapixel camera but the thought didn't even cross my mind. Maybe tomorrow I'll snap a few when we check out the damage.

Cool, I have always been fascinated to see what people live through and don't. I've only had to extricate two patients from MVA's. Sadly, in one case the driver didn't make it. The good part is the passenger did.

Even if you don't post the pictures, take some. It's important to have a visual record of the damage, just in case.

But I'll definitely be taking pictures for the baby album at the very least. If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

I went out to the towing place today and took some pics.

Wow, that looks nasty. I'm so glad your wife and baby are okay. That could have been much, much worse. Best of luck with the insurance.

That is intense! Glad to hear everything is OK though. Those car pics should make you realise just how lucky you and your wife are ... and, of course, your little boy.
(nothing to add re: insurance) |
