Hi there
I've just brought a new Macbook with Leopard. I've set up two users me and my other half. I've configured my mail to access my hotmail and it works great. But when i set up my girlfriends mail to receive her hotmail it says Connection Failure Could not connect to 'Hotmail Account' Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a subscription. Please sign up at http://join.msn.com/general/Email I don't know why i can't access it, she can sign on via Safari just not through Mail. Thanks Kamanchi |

Mail uses either POP or IMAP to access email servers. Safari is using their web interface to access the mail. If you want to access your Hotmail accounts from Mail you'll need to pay for their upgraded service to allow POP access, last I checked anyway.

Google how "hotmail" loses messages and you'll drop it all together. It is MS - just junk anyway.

I believe only 'older' Hotmail addresses will allow you to download messages. They stopped this feature for 'new' email addresses a few years ago. Maybe your girlfriends address is newer then yours.

jon is right. You can only access older free Hotmail accounts this way.

I thought that newer ones required you to "upgrade" to Hotmail + in order to access it remotely. As the error message says...

Indeed. Hotmail's spam filters will often simply not deliver messages, even those with proper sender id records. It's definitely not a service to be using unless you are ok with having some mail disappear into the aether.

I cant even find anything to do with a 'pay' hotmail account i presume thats the Windows Live Plus account, but i've searched for this and can't find it anywhere, the only Plus account i can find is for messenger. I've just checked and we both have the Windows Live hotmail accounts with 5gb storage. I don't mind paying a bit for the Hotmail service if it would work with Mail. Looks like they've upgraded everyones. It still doesn't explain why mines working and the girlfriends is not.

Instead of Hotmail, I would strongly suggest going with GMail. Although parts of me don't like the GUI of the webmail (mainly just how it looks), it's a service that works well, a SPAM filter that has a good track record and a few 'extras' that are quite nice. And it works with Mail.

It looks like my only way around it is to get a new email account. Thanks for all your help.
