I suddenly can no longer modify the Dock in Snow Leopard. I can't add applications, remove then or move them around. I am running 10.6.7. on my 2010 MacBook Pro. I have tried the basics - repairing permission, clearing caches, and rebooting in particular. I also followed a suggestion in Apple support forums to delete the file "/users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist" and then run the terminal command "killall Dock". No luck.

Am I missing something obvious here? I would be very grateful for any help.

Have you tried creating another user account? Is the one you're using now an administrator on the machine?

To me, it sounds like an authorization issue. It's possible to disallow a non-admin account from modifying the dock. I've never heard of at happening accidentally, but I suppose it's possible.

Thanks for the reply Wyatt.

My admin account does not have the problem, so, as you suggest, it is definitely an account-based problem. If it is possible that the admin account has disallowed my main (non-admin) account from modifying the dock, how can I as administrator change the setting to allow dock modification again?

Found the answer: through Parental Controls. Somehow the box allowing Dock modifications had become unchecked.

Thanks again Wyatt.
