I am having a problem with the mail program on my iBook, version 10.3.9
When I click "get mail", it has started asking for my password. I put it in, click the save option, sometimes this works, sometimes it does not work. I have shut down the machine and started it up, but this does not help. I have looked at mail preferences and put in the password again, but the instability persists. Finally, sometimes the mail icon starts jumping up and down when I am not using mail; when I click on it, it asks for my password. (I suppose that means that there is new mail waiting to be delivered.) I have been able to check email through safari and my ISP, so I guess it is not their problem. I have successfully sent mail to myself through another account. Any suggestions for the cure of this mail instability? |

Been through this - there are a few things to check.
1) Use only small letters in e-mail address - make sure your ISP has you listed this way. 2)Delete the e-mail address, username, password in Mail. Re-enter. 3)Reset router (if using one). I have many machines accessing many different ISP e-mails. Seems like the router gets sorta in a knot over this in time. (Routers "learn". Looks like they don't know how to handle multiple os/machine/accounts well). |

When that happens to me, it usually indicates a temporary problem with the mail server. If it is a persistent problem, however, I'm not sure that that's the case.

Has anyone noticed the increasing amount of spam being delivered to the inbox? Is there any way to fix this or is it a problem with filters?

What SledgeHammer says.
All weekend my sbc mail has been asking me for my password. If you have your email set up to check for mail every 30 seconds and you have bits during the day when their server is not working right, you're mail icon is going to bounce until you put in your password. (even though the server may be ok again) I just reset mail to get it manually and tried later to set it back to it's original setting, and it looks like it's fixed as I haven't had the bouncing mail icon all morning. This was happining to me also. If you Mail is checking every 30min-to-an-Hour, then sometimes the server with ask a password and thus your mail app asks you.

The SPAM rules it has learnt do not apply to the new SPAM you are getting. The SPAMMERS are clever little blighters.. I backup, clean out and reinstall mail, then import my mailboxes about once every six - nine months depending on my volume of mail..
