There have been many a thread on AN about SLR cameras.. It got me thinking: What does everyone shoot here on AN? I'd love to know what people own here. What kind of camera gear do you have?

Please don't be tempted in making this a flame war..

I've been shooting with a Canon for about a year now. So I am still a baby in the SLR world.

I've got a Canon Digital Rebel XT. My lenses include the 50mm/1.4, 28mm/1.8 and 75-300mm/4.5-5.6, as well as the Sigma 18-125mm/3.5-4.

I've also got an old AE-1 with a 50mm/1.8 and 28mm/2.8. My preferred film is Tri-X.

I also have an old 10D I got a few years ago, but I upgraded to the 400D just before the 450D came out and everyone was dropping prices on the 400D - it was almost too good to miss . The 10D now sits in the bag, not getting used much. But I might use it with my telescope for astrophotography, as long as I can get the software that supports the 10D.

Original Canon DigiRebel (300D outside US) from 2003. Awesome camera, but it seems that I can do better focusing manually then it can using autofocus. It's very slight IMO, but still noticeable to me.

I don't try this with moving targets though, just stationary ones.

At this point I only have two lenses, the stock 18-55mm EF-S and the 75-300mm non-IS.

Not to mention, there was a 35mm Rebel for a while before the DigiRebel came out. I was debating between the 35mm Rebel and Elan 7e when I found out the DigiRebel was close to release.

How do you like the D200? All the reviews are good but now that the D300 is out the review all say the 300 owns the 200 of course. I'm looking to find a good deal on the D200 I currently have a D70, great starter camera but want to upgrade and the D300 is a little $$$ for me.

Jumping from the D70 to D200 will for starters give you a much better viewfinder, metering for AI-S lenses, weatherproofing, and the ability to GPS-tag your images (GPS receiver not included). All of which are major plus points, for me at least. I bought both my D200s as Nikon refurbished bodies. Only 6-month guarantee, but cheap. I have seen new D200s still on sale as recently as 2 weeks ago at much reduced prices, and I may buy an extra one and save it for the future. This is because a D200 with the internal filter removed is superb for UV and IR photography, which I do. All successor cameras, eg D300, D3, D700 are poorer at UV/IR.

I'm not interested in the D300, but I am looking at the D700. Not for the FX sensor but for the high ISO capability. Using an f/1.2 or f/1.4 lens wide open on a high ISO camera could give interesting possibilities in low-light conditions.

Nikon has not (to my knowledge) explained why the new body is called D700. But it would allow future DX bodies to be called D400, D500, D600. And future compact FX bodies could be called D800, D900. That should give Nikon a few more years before they have to invent a new system for non-pro bodies.

Nice glass sunrain. You're very well placed for a full frame. 2 questions:
1) Was this a conscious strategy when you made your lens purchases?
2) How's the 70-200 IS to lug around?

Thanks. Yes, I did plan ahead for buying a full frame camera and figured that it would be best to buy the glass first. Of course, I was eventually planning to buy the 5D, but then the mumbling started about it's replacement so I'm holding off.

I started with the 50mm, then added the 24-70mm and most recently got the 70-200mm. Other than a super-wide I'm pretty set, although I do plan on buying the 85L when my wife and I get down to the midget making. Best. baby. photos. evar.

I haven't yet lugged the big zoom around for extended periods, but I'm heading to NYC in August and plan to take it all with me. We'll see how soon I cry uncle.

Also, I did pick up some photo gear insurance once I bought the 2nd zoom. Seemed like a no-brainer once I realized how much value I was carrying around in my backpack. It will only get worse.

I am not that professional, I only have a canon A590. It is just for everyday use.

I just ordered a new lens. Canon EF 75-300 f/4-5.6 telephoto zoom. $159 at J&R, apparently I saved over $1100 off the (original) retail price, haha. Since I'm a noob, this will be a good lens for me to learn with I think.

I am seriously considering a BIG switch to Nikon as soon as I get the funds to pull it off. The D700 is extremely tempting. Pair that with the 24-70mm, and it's a killer combo.

Why switch? Are you already using Canon? Is so, then stay there. That lens-camera combination will cost you $5000. Canon will have a 5D Mk2 soon enough.

No one shooting either of the two major brands has any real reason to switch.

What are you trying to learn? That's a lens that goes from long to really long. It's great if you want to do wildlife or sports but a 75-300 isn't really much of a walkaround lens.

Yeah, a telephoto zoom is a bit of a specialist lens. I wouldn't have thought it particularly useful for general photography, but any lens is good for something. However, unless it's actually the 70-300 mm Diffractive Optics version it was never even remotely close to $1k.

Exactly - but at BH Photo, even the non-DO version goes for ~$500, so I think he got a good price regardless.

That's the 70-300 mm IS version, ezkcdude, an overpriced lens if there ever were one. Get your Canon lenses right!

But the 75-300 mm is $200 at B&H, so he did still get a good deal. At least if he knows what the lens is good for (not taking snapshots).

Right, I didn't mean that it's a useless lens. The poster said he was still a newb, so I was wondering why he'd buy such a long zoom unless he had a specific purpose for it.
