Just received a replacement Sumo Omni, opened up the box, and lo and behold in the plastic covering for the bean bag, was this little creature. I'm sure it's a moth, but have no idea what type and google was no help. According to the tracking information, the package was sent from Plattsburgh, which is a smidgen north of Adirondack Park in upstate New York, close to the Canadian border.

Seen them before, I know they're common in the midwest. Not sure what the name is though.

Hey, this makes me think of something. I'm sure they exist, but if not it's a great idea: are there little iPhone/iPod touch-based "field guides" available for different animals? A digital reference book, each focused on particular animals (insects, birds, reptiles, etc.).
If you're someone who hikes a lot, or simply walks around your neighborhood where you see a lot of wildlife, a neat little well-designed iPhone app that helps you identify this stuff would be neat. I'm off to the app store to see if these exist (surely someone's thought of this by now). I'd be interested in a reasonably-priced bird and insect one, because I'm always seeing lots of...well, birds and insects. What category would that fall under in the App Store, I wonder? Is there a "science" category? Or hobbies? Off to look... EDIT: Ah, I see one called (quite creatively) "Birds". I guess they do exist... |

The wing shape makes it look like a sphinx moth, but I'm not sure exactly what type. Maybe a Carolina sphinx? No, that's close, but probably not it.

I couldn't find one for insects. Might be a neat idea for an iPhone app for a programmer to pursue.

Sorry bud. Was meant in humor; was kind of hoping for a "shape changing cufflink moth that can appear at any time and abduct people to put squares on their back" dialog but apparently my attempt at humor has fallen off the fail boat.

It doesn't look like an abbot sphinx. Here are 4 more, 3 with wings spread, and 1 ventral view of the abdomen:

Found an image of one that looks pretty similar to me, but it is in an ID request queue with no answer yet. The interesting thing is that it was found in Oregon.

Heh. Don't worry... that was also my lame attempt at humour.
