Whoa. How did we let this one slip by?
It was four years ago (and three days) that Mac OS X 10.0 was of officially launched for sale to the general public. March 21, 2001. It's been quite a ride since! We've seen countless improvements as our little baby has matured. We've also seen several new additions to the family including iLife, iWork, and the iPod (the big man on campus). Who else here has been on the X train since the start? Who else remembers the raging debates over "4K78"? Who here actually believed the fairy tales about "debug code"? For you historians, here are the press releases: "Mac OS X Hits Stores This Weekend" and "More than 10,000 Developers Working on Mac OS X Solutions" Mac OS X, I raise a toast to you tonight. Here's to another great year! The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. Even though I am only a recent friend of OSX (introduced by her cousins in the *Nix family), I wish her well and hope she has a long, happy life.

I think I joined on at 10.1 (which was only six months later if I recall), but I did buy the public beta of 10.0 so I was a part of it from the beginning anyway.

I was there from the get-go (put the public beta on my iMac DV) back in 2000. Then got the white box with the blue gel "X" in when it came out the following spring. I still had to use OS 9 for most things, but I found myself booting into X more and more as time went on.
When I bought my iMac G4 in March 2002, the first thing I did was yank OS 9 (System Folder, Applications OS 9, etc.) off the thing and run straight, undiluted OS X. When I decided it was time to "go X", I fully committed and didn't want any aspect of OS 9 to lean on, cheat with, fall back to, etc. When autumn rolled around, I happily stepped up to Jaguar (again, removing all traces of the vile OS 9 from my system). A year-and-a-half later, straight Panther on my PowerBook, and eagerly awaiting Tiger's release... Happy birthday, OS X! You changed everything...for the better. |

Welcome back, scates! I was just wondering where you ran off to. I know you've been back for a couple of days now, but this is the first post I've seen in about a week.

I still miss the times of playing the Oregon Trail on Mac OS 8.6.
You know, back when that game wasn't so very old and OS 8.6 was the best in the business. Founder of the Applenova Folding Team |

Like scates, I too put the public beta on my iMac DV. I have been an OSX user since 19/9/2000.
Edit: Oh and it cost me a whole £25 - I still have the receipt!! OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available! |

Coolest thing...
I've got the same Mac that I did when experimenting with DP4 but it keeps getting faster with each release. Who knows, I might be able to go 6 years on this thing if Tiger continues the trend. Tiger on a dual 1400 G4 with a radeon 9800 and 2gigs of ram... maybe it'll last even longer. |

Back when it wasn't so old? The game was already ancient when OS8 was released. The game was originally developed and released in the mid-70s. I had it on my Commodore 64c, back when that wasn't so old. |

Happy (not March 21st) birthday OS X! Six years ago today (January 6th), Steve unveiled OS X at MWSF, and look how far it's come. Heck, next week it might even make the transition to being sold for Intel. I hope they took the debug code out this time.

I actually did some housecleaning recently and tossed out the original Public Beta "envelope" and accompanying skinny guide. I saved the CD for kicks, though. It still boots great on my dual 500 G4.

Just remember that it's still not the sixth birthday until late March.
Celebrating now would be akin to celebrating its "conception" at MacWorld. |
