Guess that makes me content with the current state of things.
I agree with Mugge. The best thing of the reputation system is not the little green or red slime-balls, but the comments that come with them. Those short comments give you a global idea of the nice quality or shittiness of your posts; if you have a bad day you can hit yourself in the face before posting again.

It gives you as an user the ability to comment on another member spontaneously without flooding the thread with: 'Well said!' and 'Yeah, you got me by the titties' or 'I think you're a smart shit, thanks for being such a genius.' And that's the greatest quality of the reputation system in my view. It's a great addition to the AN-experience.

So: kill the green boogies but keep the comments! No more 'look, my dots are bigger then yours'-competition; just the fun!

Wow. A lot can happen in a couple of days if you don't post!

In my humble opinion, the reputation system was totally superficial, and therefore rather unnecessary. I won't say that it wasn't fun, because it was. I like that it's still available in the user CP, since it's nice to know when a post is appreciated or useful.

With regard to join date and post count, I think a balance has to be achieved. Just because a member didn't join on that fateful day in May 2004, doesn't make that person any less valuable to the community. Also, an infrequent poster shouldn't be valued less because of their low post count. However I did like seeing which members were new, as mentioned above, since it's obviously more likely that I'd trust (to some extent) someone who's posted several posts.

How about the system used in other forums, where the user title changes depending on post count, without explictely displaying the actual post count. (As seen on AI and others); i.e. Less than 50 posts - 'Nova newbie, 50-500 posts - Established Novian, 500-2000 posts - 'Nova veteran, 2000-9999 'Nova Addict, 10,000+ Brad

It's not perfect, but a system like this would be my ideal solution.

Naw. That's been there for a while now. I check your profile regularly, because I know a certain moderator likes to show his collection of funny NSFW pictures there.

When AppleNova was established, we explicitly decided not to use such a ranking system because those kinds of titles encourage wasteful bantering just to get someone to the next level. They also often incorrectly stratify the users. Darwin, for example, would have been a "newbie" for most of his time here despite being the server administrator.

The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. AppleNova is not a real-time chat forum. You have time to compose messages and edit them before and after posting.

As one of the old'uns on this site (original members), yet not an admin/mod, and a dude who's been online since the early 80's, I'm of the opinion (stated frequently before) that quality of posts matters more than quantity.

I'm a fan of the private feedback that comes from the rep button. It helps me learn (even after decades of posting) what works and doesn't work. Sometimes that's a function of what time/state I post, sometimes it's a valuable gauge of the mood of the forum or a pulse on the funny bone of the community. There are days when I'm rambling and I appreciate the smackdown that tells me I'm off base. There are other times when I'm in tune and it's nice to hear that I'm hitting the right notes.

That said, those who whine about post rep (and I've done it myself... once) need to get over themselves and concentrate on doing better rather than bitching about poor posting that in all honesty they know they should have been busted for. Less crying... more creative.

I'm all for keeping it private as a fallback... (if nothing else)... helps the individual learn without making it a public exercise in braggadocio.

I do, however, make judgements based on perceived wisdom... N00bs need to earn cred.
Old'uns like me don't get it automatically... everybody has to pay some dues.
I've read posts from lurkers which demand immediate respect. Rare, but true.

Post count isn't everything, but it does help clue us to who's an AN virgin... and we each have our own approach to them.

A statement with which I'm sure murbot would agree on a variety of levels.

I'd give my first-ever rep point of either shade to you for that fine post 'burb except, as you can't see it anyway, what's the point?

Is there facility for making the rep system op in/out? (I can think of one possible way off the top of my head.) Well, assuming there is here's my plan (based on a modified version of the Underpant's Gnome Theory including an additional step).

Step 1 The AN Disclaimer of Death
OK, so when people register they're given a brief description of how the rep system works and they have to opt in or out. But if they opt in, it is on the understanding that they do so at their own risk and that no further correspondence will be entered into by the management. It may be beneficial for people to be given a gentle reminder of this whenever they go to give a rep as well.

Step 2 Brad's Button
So named after it's future creator! (Wait, wait, here me out before you groan.) Anybody who's opted into the rep system who has a problem is in no uncertain terms directed to the special "Brad's Button" that links to the section of the AN Management Team that handles rep disputes. When clicked on, an auto reply is generated that reminds them they were told at the time of their registration opting into the rep system meant they accepted the terms of the AN Disclaimer of Death, that they've been reminded of this whenever they have used the rep system but that, nevertheless, they are now being reminded again in case they missed it the first eleventy-bajillion times. Then thank them for their interest and participation at applenova, tell them you hope they enjoy their stay and politely, but firmly, ask them to please fuck off (you might want to rework that last phrase a bit, I think it could be a bit skewed to the 'firmly' side of things).

Oh, oh, oh I've got an ever better one! A series of auto replies that leads the poor bastards to believe they're actually addressing a real person who's taking them seriously. O yeah, Vote 1 hilarity......

Step 3 ???

Step 4 PROFIT!

So whaddya think? Needless to say, I think it's a work of pure genius.......

Agreed. They are a usefull indicator.

To the Overlords, I sympathise with your complaint about PMs from people whinging about rep. points. Why not just issue a notice that you will ignore them. Let the rep system run itself. With all due respect, sometimes reacting to these things makes people realise they can get attention that way.. If you ignore it it will eventually find it's own level.

I know I have had a dinging fight with one person, but it didn't last long becuase of rules in the rep system, and how it works. I can't understand what people manage to get into a lather about.. It's one blow for blow exchange, and then you have to go find someone else to ding. In the end the people who I dinged, and who dinged me ended up seeing how silly it was and sorting it out. No need for mods, or admins to get involved. Last I looked we were both giving each other green dots!

I like being able to give some kind of appreciation to people for advice or help. That's mainly what I use the rep system for.. Recently I got some help and a couple of people showed me Chicken of VNC, so I gave them some green dots. Big deal. The message, as Mugge says, is the most important part - Being able to say 'Thanks', without getting into a PM and all that lovey dovey shit.

If someone is really being an ass, then I will let them know. Red rep point.

We all know that some of the newer and more unstable users can ding away at people to their hearts content and it won't do anything to the people who have been here a longer time. That's quite funny.

With drugs, we all acknowledge that the War on Drugs is a waste of money and time... Education and moderation is the key. Perhaps the same thing is needed with these systems, if we are to keep them. Put some guidelines up, ignore the idiots PMing because they got into a dinging war with each other, and now are crying about it. And heck, ban them for repeated pointless PMing of an admin. In short, if you use the rep system there is no reason to contact an admin about it later.. It's between you and the community.

With the rules that envelope the rep system it's pretty hard for any repetative permanent damage / serious abuse to be done to an individual (unless you believe in conspiracy theorys and lynch mobs - in which case we have a social problem / group bullying problem here which is indemic and is not just going to affect the rep system). And if people care so little about the rep system, and look at it so rarely, why does everyone have a view?

WIth all due respect, and I am not there doing valuable admin work guys n gals so I may not have the full details, I think you sometimes make these problems worse for yourselves by getting too involved, perhaps caring too much, and then making more work for yourselves.. Does it really matter is dufus 1 and dufus 2 have pissed each other off? Tell them to get a life.

I think I have PMd an admin about 10 times (if that) since I have been here. Most of the time it has been a quick note to ask a quick question, or to doff my hat for a favour, or so on..

If people are PMing every 5 minutes tell them to get a life.

Even though I voted for Beer (couldn't really help myself), I find myself in complete agreement with everything scratt just said. I thought the rep system was kind of fun, and added a little extra interest to the AN experience. It was kinda nice to sort the member list by rep and always see Jack popping up at the top. It was even more fun to sort by post count and see what red dots came up on the first couple of pages. Now that was revealing!

But you can't take it too seriously. I know I don't deserve most of the rep points I've accumulated (mostly for acting as "class clown", as someone else recently put it). I can't imagine whining to an admin because somebody gave me bad rep. When one of my kids comes complaining "so-and-so called me a bad name", I tell 'em to work it out themselves, or go to their room.

So I say put it back on the User CP and member list, and let it run itself. And beer.

Hey, weren't there supposed to be strippers too?

Edit: I just realized that not everyone can actually see who gave them rep points. Maybe this feature should be opened up to all users? That would make it easier for people to take responsibility for their own issues, instead of involving an admin. Sure, it could also increase the potential for rep wars, but anyone who gets caught up in one of those probably deserves it.
