Another day, another QT problem from within Safari

Until tonight, QuickTime movies would play and be displayed properly from within Safari.

But all of a sudden and for no reason I can think of (I'm up-to-date with Software Update, I've repaired permissions, reset Safari, trashed the prefs file) whenever I try and view a QT movie from Safari (whether it's embedded as part of the page, or just the 'pure' .mov file and not an HTML file).

This is what happens:
I always get a black box where the movie would be and the words "(no picture) displayed
Control-clicking on the black box doesn't bring up a contextual menu
Hovering + clicking on the box doesn't do anything (it doesn't appear to be a link)
The QT logo is not displayed, nor is the 'torn document' icon shown
Playing a QT file embedded within an HTML page (eg the front page of apple.com) displays the "(no picture)"
Playing a .mov file from within Safari - both a URL and dragged from my HD - also displays "(no picture)"
I can tell the movie's being downloaded in the background, because it says so in the status bar at the bottom of the screen ("1.7MB loaded of 5.4MB" etc).

I've tried the following with no results:
repairing permissions
trashing Safari + QT prefs
Resetting Safari

Has anyone else had this problem? I've got Inquisitor installed and tried uninstalling that, but even without any plug-ins, Safari refuses to play QuickTime movies - Camino seems to be displaying them fine.

Edit: it's something to do with the installing the latest version of VLC 0.8.5 apparently...

When I downloaded VLC 0.8.5, I also downloaded some optional Mozilla plug-in (can't quite remember what it was). I deleted/ uninstalled that, and everything Safari was happy again.

Fwiw - I got rid of QT and VLC and then reinstalled QT, but I think I could have got away with just trashing all of my VLC stuff and leaving QT as it was.

Anyway, I'm happy - all is well again and Safari has not crashed since. (I noticed it did this a fair bit since I experienced the "(no picture)" phenomenon.)
