I was going to *bump* my old thread, but I thought I'd make a poll because I'd like to know whether or not there are any others in the 'an' community who have a mac account and have been receiving spam lately.

Now, I know that the Junk Mail filter can catch it, but this is beside the point. I've had my .mac email address since about 2001 (iTools) and for four years it was pristine! This year, however, I have started receiving spam (a trickle at first, but it has increased recently) and it really pisses me off!

So, in the spirit of misery loves company, I'd just like to know how many of you have been receiving spam at your .mac address, and the quantity per day?

Once you answer the poll question, if you could elaborate on the following two questions I'd appreciate it too.
  1. What are you doing to combat spam on your .mac account?
  2. If you tried spam@mac.com, do you think they are effective presently (AUG 2006)?

----------
1) I forward it (with headers) to spam@mac.com. At first they used to reply to each email with a "thankyou and we take this seriously type" response, but lately there have been no replies. I never reply to the spam, nor do I bounce it back either.
2) I don't think the spam@mac service is working very well presently. Initially it slowed the spam down to one or two every four days or so ... but now, my spam rate is up to four a day easily.

I get about one a day, and I think the source is the same for each message because the subject line is very similar in each one I get. Annoying, but only minorly so, really.

Never tried spam@mac.com. Maybe I will.

Nope, never recieved any spam that I can think of, well ... except from the odd newsletter I've subscribed to and never bbother to unsubscribe from.

Any email account gets spam though, there isn't much you can do to avoid getting it.

I've been getting my ass kicked lately with spam. Most days I get 7-8. On bad days, I can get 15-20. Nearly all of them hot stock tips. And no matter how many times I press that "junk" button, Mail.app doesn't seem to learn. I probably get more spam than regular email now that I'm done with my postdoc. It's pretty frustrating.

edit: I just counted: Every day in the past week, I've gotten at least 7 and that doesn't count things I've just decided I'd like to junk like emails from the Motley Fool or Hallmark. On 2 occasions, I got 13.

Geez tori you have good resolve to keep that account. I'd be sorely tempted to call it a day and close that .mac address. I have other email accounts (one gmail account is pristine) but I really like my .mac address and I don't want to lose it.

MOD HELP - PLEASE ADD A NEW OPTION
More than four each day, but I still put up with it.

... and move torifile's choice to this new option. TIA

I've had it too long to change it now. There's not a whole lot I can do at this point.

We had a family reunion and I was with my cousin, we both had our iBooks and went to .Mac for our mail I had twelve "nasties" (a couple of days worth) I called out the subjects and he had the same exact ones.

He's on the road (pilot) and he depends on it for mail and he's getting pretty sick of it.

and yeah I get probably 5 - 10 every day.

I'm getting the same amount as torifle.

I went years without a single spam e-mail, now I'm up to my ass in the things.

I use .Mac's other services, like .Mac Sync, among others.

but, I don't think I will renew it when it comes around again next June. It's not worth the $100 a year to keep my bookmarks synced...

I use my university email, though, as my primary email and have been for about 4 months. The .Mac account has become completley STUFFED with spam. 5 or 6 a day.

I'm forwarding an old email address to .mac, so it's not .mac's fault. It's the insidious stock spam that randomizes the from address and somehow uses a .gif image as the message body to thwart exclude lists.

I get that bitch like once or twice a day, on occasion four times. I hope they catch that person.

I've never heard of this "spam@mac.com".

I don't get much spam anyway. I always use aliases except for family.

spam@mac.com worked for me but now, I'm afraid, everything has turned for the worst. IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE!

I've been lucky enough to avoid spam in my .mac inbox...so far. (I don't use it that often, which probably helps.) In comparison, my primary e-mail account receives roughly 15-20 junk messages per day, up from roughly 1/3 that amount just two weeks ago; and then there's my Gmail account, which easily triples (and occasionally quadruples) that figure. I use that account for essentially nothing, so I'm sorta perplexed at how I got added to so many spamlists...

It's increasing gradually... Currently 4 a day.

And less and less responses to reported spam from spam@mac.com.

Unfortunately, I do indeed seem to be getting more of it here lately. I used to get none whatsoever, but now it's daily. Anywhere from 3-10. I, too, have been a .Mac (iTools?) user from day one (pre-$99 days) and up until about 6-8 months ago, I lived a very spam-free life.

Here lately (a month or so) I've been getting quite a bit in Asian characters (but my name will be spelled in English in the header.

On the regular stuff, I don't get any outright porn stuff, but rather things for medication/prescriptions, "stock tips", discount clothing, various erection enhancers, etc.

I try to be super careful about who I give my e-mail address to. But I know there are all kinds of ways it can be found out and exploited.

I do hate it. What a miserable thing it is. This, telemarketers (which I don't hear much from anymore, thank goodness) and regular junk mail in my mailbox...I hate them all. I've never acted on ANYTHING from any of them. And I never will. If I want aluminum siding, SUNGLASSES AT OUTRAGEOUS PRICES!!! and need to stay "rock hard all night to give her the satisfaction she deserves", I know where to go/what to do about it. I don't need daily reminders, cluttering my life this way.

ditto for everything you have just said.

That recent attack here (PM Spam), and previous attacks linked to this forum (where they hit my mail as well as my PM here, as Brad and I discussed at one point) do show that emails get harvested even if they are only displayed on the screen somewhere, or in the AIM links in your profile... not necesarily links.

I am very careful about who gets my .mac email address, add to that the fact that you and I have pretty much the same SPAM and the same procedures for avoiding getting it, shows that these emails at least are coming from more determined Spammers perhaps.

The only true revenge on advertisers is to never buy anything that the advertising for offends you or invades your life. If we all did that the promotors would get some interesting feedback sometimes, and a few corporations would be stressed on occasion. I doubt I would ever find an Apple Ad. annoying enough to boycott them, which is handy.. But I do change trivial things like soap brands, or food brands, if they bombarb me with retarded adverts over a short period. I still maintain the right to buy stuff that is the best at a specific job, that way not cutting off my nose to spike my face..

The funny thing is, and I am not sure which way round this is, but most products I like I find the advertising tolerable at least..

1: I don't really know. I guess I posted my address on a forums somewhere, I'd imagine.

2: I didn't know/forgot about that....

Within last two weeks, I've gotten spam emails writteing in Japanese/Chinese with my username in it. And the translation seemed freaky, so I just delete them.

I've recieved nothing near 23 though. My GMails is about 1-3 a week though.

EDIT: I and pscates seem to have same problem, I haven't time to read the rest of the thread though.

>_<

Around 25-50 each day. I purposely abscure my email address every where, but some dumb ass on a forum reposted it unabscured to clarify what it was. That was the end of spam free email.

Do they even have to harvest it anymore? I thought they just grabed popular names and attached them to the begining of popular services.

I get upwards of 20 a day recently. I even get spam to a Gmail account that I've never even used.

No, that's too easy for them. I suggest something medieval!

I get about 6 a day, I hadn't heard about spam@mac.com so I just used the bounce button in Mail. Usually Mails spam filter is pretty good though.

I just woke up and checked my e-mail for the first time since yesterday around 4:00pm and I had 11, but nine had been routed to my Junk box and I tagged the two new ones as Junk, so I shouldn't see them again.

Very strange. Three of them were the ones with the Asian characters, the rest just the standard old crap.

I've had this kind of problem, too, with a Yahoo! account. I just assume they don't even harvest addresses, they simply use some kind of email address generator and go to town.
