Hoping someone can help. I have a Macbook Pto. I have mounted an external hard drive which I put all my files on from my PC before switching (primarily mp3's and pictures). The problem I am having is that when I went to put a new iphoto library on it and or move the existing one it tells me it can't do it. It seems that every folder on the drive is read only. The disk utility tells me it can read and write. Under the folder info there is no option as on the internal hard drive to switch it to read write, it is greyed out. I am a rookie to Mac so forgive me if I am overlooking something real simple here. Any help would be appreciated.

Check how the HD is formatted. If it's formatted in NTFS, that's read-only in Mac OS X. If you want to use the drive to read and write files easily in both Windows and Mac OS X, you should use the FAT file system.

I just got my first mac (first post on the new macintosh), and I am having this same problem. How do you go about reformatting the hard drive like said above?

/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Select the drive in the panel on the left. Choose the Erase or Partition tab on the right and choose your options. |
