Kind of weird that they bothered with an upgrade if it's the A10 again?

(Don't get me wrong — it's actually a great tablet. You won't find any $329 Android tablet that comes close.)

I thought it was. Maybe they had way more stock of that chip than they thought they did.

It's a measure of keeping the cost down so Apple can maintain their margins.

Well, another measure of keeping costs down would have been to simply not update the model at all.

I'm buying one. Probably tomorrow. Maybe even this evening.

Nice.

Yeah, right there with you. Although I do kind of understand the reasoning. After all, the iPad Air keyboard now works with the new iPad and the old iPad Pro 10.5", so no cost associated with designing a new thing. But, that just makes the iPad Air make even less sense. I mean, it's not that the upgrade isn't worth it (faster A12 chip, faster screen refresh rate, better camera), but who is the iPad Air's customer?

In laptop land, the "Air" moniker represents the low end. In iPad land, it represents a midrange product without a home.

Yeah, I’m not sure why they reintroduced the mid-tier if they were going to add the Smart Connector to the low end. Seems odd.

My iPad shipped. New ETA: 25th September. Yes, 5 days before they are available in stores....

They did, however, ignore my Apple Gift Card (from trading in my old iPad) and charged the whole thing to my credit card, and I've called twice to have that corrected...no joy yet. Hmm.

I've had some issues with the trade ins in the past as well. Once, they didn't credit the purchase I made with a trade in and just gave me gift cards instead. Didn't really work for me. Took a few calls to get it straightened out.

The new iPad looks like a steal at that price. Just wish they could get FaceID to come down in price a bit. Once you have it, it's tough to go back to TouchID.

So, I have the new iPad in hand. It's nice!

(TBH, it's the previous gen iPad Air for less money, essentially.)

Still, doing a lot better than my previous iPad 2. Interestingly, it shipped with 13.1 installed.
