Calm down everyone. I don't want to be the babysitter here.

Yes, it's true that Apple didn't make the 64-bit processor. If anything, I think we should commend them for their negotiations with IBM to get them to make the G5 the perfect processor for them to use. I mean, Apple can't just use any processor. The G5 has AltiVec (albeit a less advanced version than on the 7450-series G4), making it just right for the Power Mac. But this is a tangent that isn't even relevant to the topic, and it's getting all you guys angry at each other. So just cool down and think before you post.

Don't expect that to change anytime soon as long as Jobs is in power - he just can't seem to come up with anything to beat a $500 Dell. He's taken the company and driven it into the ground.

Just a bit of opposite view for ya
All of the Macs (and any decent PC) will beat a $500 Dell. The $500 Dells are pretty shitty and Apple should stay well away from the extremely low margined $500 computers for now. The problem is that Apple doesn't have a computer that can stand up to a $1200 - $1500 Dell system that doesn't cost over twice as much. Mac users never minded paying 25% more to get a Mac the equivalent in power of a PC, but needing to pay 100% more is just ridiculous.

Apple just needs to come out with a computer somewhere near the $1500 mark that can match a 3.4GHz P4 system. A single processor 2.5GHz G5 should do the job, but I don't think the yields are high enough yet, so we will probably get a 2GHz iMac for $1799 that would have been a killer last year, but will be a bit disappointing for a September 2004 release.

Of course, Apple could always supprise us...

Not like this. Not like this...

I'm not saying $500 Dells aren't crappy - it's just that they're very appealing to people who are buying new computers, as well as schools because they cost so little. Apple just can't compete - this is why they've lost the education market which used to draw huge sales for them. I believe if someone with brains got into Apple, they could easily make a QUALITY Mac at a decent speed for $600-$700. But since nobody has brains anymore, it's likely not gonna happen anytime soon. Too bad

Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday reported a profit of $61 million or $.16 per diluted share for its fiscal third quarter ended June 26, 2004.

"It was an outstanding quarter-our highest third quarter revenue in eight years," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Our Mac-based revenue grew a healthy 19 percent, and our music-based revenue grew an incredible 162 percent. We've got a strong product portfolio, with some amazing new additions coming later this year."

In comparison to the year-ago quarter, Apple had a net profit of $19 million, or $.05 per diluted share. Revenue for this quarter was $2.014 billion, up 30 percent from the year-ago quarter. Apple indicated that accounted for 39 percent of the quarter's revenue.

Apple shipped 876 thousand Macintosh units and 860 thousand iPods during the quarter, representing a 14 percent increase in CPU units and a 183 percent increase in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

"We were very pleased with our 30 percent year-over-year revenue growth and our operating margin expansion," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO.

Looking forward Oppenheimer said he expects the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004, to have revenue of about $2.1 billion and earnings per diluted share of $.16 to $.17, including $.01 per diluted share in restructuring charges."

This quarter's results include an after-tax restructuring charge of $6 million. Excluding this charge, the Company's net profit for the quarter would have been $67 million, or $.17 per diluted share.
As always, Jobs is extremely optomistic, which is great. Hopefully it's less hype than it appears to be, these kinds of statements are always purposely blissful. "Amazing new additions coming later this year" is plural!

The $61 million aint bad either.

"We are reviewing some 9,000 recent UNHCR referrals from Syria. We are receiving roughly a thousand new ones each month, and we expect admissions from Syria to surge in 2015 and beyond." - Anne C. Richard, Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration

Y'know...one day in the next few years when Macs start failing on people widespread, Apple will wish they had never sold all those lemons they make!
