I need to buy 12gb of ram for the new mac pro, but ive heard that many types are incompatible with it even thought the specs may fit what apple says it needs.

for example, i found some cheaper FB-DIMMS on newegg.com for $366 that are 2gb, ECC, FB-DIMM 667mhz, PC5300. This is the kingston valueram. However, when i talk to the kingston people they say it will not work with the mac pro.

is this a heat issue or something else? if anyone knows, is there a place to buy guranteed-to-work ram that will cost significantly less than Apple's $700 and more around the price of the aforementioned newegg ram?

THANKS!

A post over at Macintouch mentions the following site fthat offers FB-DIMMS that are compatible with the new Mac Pros. I can't vouch for the savings if any compared to Apple. Caveat emptor and all that: http://www.datamem.com/AMM22.asp

Other World Computing (OWC) is a reputable retailer of Mac related parts, including ram. If I was in your shoes I'd feel very comfortable dealing with http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory Good wishes and shop wisely with value in mind. Prices are easily forgotten if problems arise and retailers aren't there to work with you.

Well I would also check OWC, but I must say if you need 12GB of RAM you must be doing so serious computing and in which case it better be paying for itself. so that will make it a little easier to swallow.
