All right, folks. Let's see if there's been any improvement among you. I think our ISPs actually do less to upgrade our bandwidth than they say. I couldn't find the old thread but mine seems about the same. Varies between 4400 Kbps and 4800 kbps depending on which location I ping to, or about .5MB/second. So a 20 MB file should take me 40 seconds to download (confirmzD by teh Apple downlo@dz!).

Not too shabby but I know some of you FiOS weenies out there are probably 3x that fast or something ridiculous like that.

Great. According to my old score my bandwidth has been cut by 52%.

Damn asshole cable companies. Ironically I searched in the General forum as I was thinking technology but the original was posted here anyway. Might have something to do with the time of year and time of day but the speeds I get now seem pretty typical. It's all my damn neighbors whoring up my precious bandwidth! Get off my line you punx!

I'm reliably getting 16-17mbps, despite only paying for 10mbps. Not too shabby at all!

Even more bizarre...when I went to the Shaw site to check exactly what it is that I pay for, it claimed that the 10mbps service was not available in my area yet. Although I have it....and get more than they offer, even....

Is that fibre service?

Ironically when I use that Vancouver server I get a much better score.

Wankers

My problem is I'm about 1/2 mile as the crow flies from the exchange, but the line distance is about 10 miles

Close to the top speed of 5mbps, a little disappointed with the upload on Shaw though.

It's some sort of ethernet line (I haven't the foggiest as to whether it's T-3). We have a bunch of iMacs in our grad student offices, so I just tested the one at my desk. That's wayyyyy better than what I get at home (which is more around ~4000 kb/sec last time I checked).

Better a T-3 line than a T-1000.

Funny, we only pay for 500kb down and 128kb up...I think.

Could they have upgraded our service and just not told us? We're not paying anything different than we were before.

Come waste your time with me

I seem to recall something about certain companies may go ahead with upgrades on their hardware which can give better than advertised speeds but not publicly advertise because the upgrade isn't complete in a given location and didn't want to mislead people until everyone theoretically had access to the same level of service.

Verizon FiOS, lowest tier (5 mbps). Curiously, Atlanta and New York both give me slightly better results than D.C.

What's the FiOS running you at that price point?

I have internet, TV, and telephone (landline) all on one bill and the total package is about $125, including fees and taxes. The internet alone is $39.99.

That's pretty respectable. Beats the hell out of my $60 cable interweb, though admittedly it's at least 2 or 3x as fast as local DSL. No FiOS in the Chicago burbs for a while though.

Strangest thing about the service is this big-ass Actiontec wireless router they give you. It stands about 13" tall, not including the antenna. Works OK, but no better than the little ol' Linksys I used to have.
