Hello,

I just got a grant to buy a MBP (I'm glad I had the gumption to ask for a MBP to word process on now - I NEED a backlit keyboard!), and I was wondering how easy/difficult it is to put a new hard drive in a MBP. I can get a HD for it for $40 less than the upgrade price, so if I can install it myself, it would be nice.

I've done some upgrades to computers before (RAM, HD's, optical drives), but never a laptop. I'm assuming it's more difficult.

Any advice would be appreciated. I am going to wait until the C2D upgrade because I don't need it immediately. Thanks!

The current MBP doesn't have an easily replaceable hard drive. It's really difficult and dangerous, and it will void your warranty as well. Better to either go BTO (despite the high cost) or just get an external hard drive.

Since the MacBook has an easily replaceable hard drive, I wouldn't be surprised if the MBP gets the same feature as well with the next upgrade. So if you wait for the Core 2 Duo you might just get your replaceable hard drive. Allowing upgrades seems like more of a "Pro" feature anyway, so it wouldn't make sense for Apple to keep the MBP hard to upgrade while making it easy to upgrade the MB.

How about can you upgrade it to a C2 chip?

No, I don't believe the MacBook Pro's CPU is socketed.

Its not, at least not on the original MBPs. I don't see why they would change, but it is possible that the Core 2 MacBook Pros are socketed. If this is an important feature, wait until some show up in the wild.
