I'm not sure how many people have been following or are aware of this, but there has been quite a battle for the Christmas number 1 music single in the UK which was decided this evening. The two singles battling it out were the usual one from the XFactor winner (Joe McSomething) and... erm... Killing in the name by Rage Against The Machine...
It has become somewhat of a tradition for the winner of XFactor to get Christmas number 1, so a few people on FaceBook (700,000 or so) thought they should buy something else instead as some sort of protest against Simon Cowell / XFactor. And it worked! Its all a bit of a shock, and a few records were set along the way including being the first UK number 1 by downloads alone. Being not the biggest fan of XFactor, I think it's quite brilliant, although quite a dodgy and ironic choice of song, but RATM are donating over £70,000 to charity from it which has to be a good thing. Who said the internet was bad for music? |

Perspective via some historical UK Xmas #1 races...
Who knew Chocolate Salty Balls was so close to toppling teh Spice Girls. Also confirms Brits have some wacked taste in Xmas music... and hilariously bad videos. Wizzard? Glam rock era and all, OK... but Mr. Blobby? All those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand. |

I remember the raging Spice Girls v South Park fight for the number 1 spot, and the last proper battle in 2003 with The Darkness who should have won it (what a depressing Christmas No 1 Mad World was)
Anyway, after the farce of last year, with one of the worst, cheesiest versions of Hallelujah by the XFactor winner trouncing Jeff Buckley's version, Im quite happy with how this year worked out. |
