It's April Fool's day, so there's a chance this isn't actually happening, but still... the event is apparantly for EMI's "exciting new digital offering", with Steve Jobs as special guest, a "special live performance" by an unnamed band/ artist... Sounds promising. Beatles + iTunes, anyone?

Actually, Macrumors specifically states that it's not an April Fool's joke at all.

In addition to or instead of Beatles on iTunes, another possibility is DRM-less EMI songs, since EMI has been pursuing that for a while.

its not a rumour. I work at EMI, in the building where this will happen. I am hoping to meet Sir Jobs myself - perhaps sneak a peek at his iPhone

I (personally) dont think its about the Beatles either...

Personally, I'm hoping for the announcement of the start of a DRM-less iTunes Music Store!

I'd buy more if it were DRM free. I'll be interested in hearing the result of this meeting.

I'd like to see DRM-free music, as well as Apple Lossless formatted instead of Mp3.

Not gonna happen. Mostly because the iTS isn't mp3 at all! It's aac.

what do you think the chances are of Apple moving to Apple Lossless though? Audiophiles know that iPods are the best there is for PMPs, so why not offer them the best quality music instead of MP3s?

The shear bandwidth requirements for transferring lossless boggles the mind. I also haven't found good enough low-profile headphones to merit putting lossless onto my iPod, so AAC it is.

Is it DRM that's the problem or is it that people can't use their iTunes music on any device? I know that they may sound the same, but would people object to having to authorize their tunes if they could play it however they wanted?

WSJ is reporting that the event has been set up to announce that EMI is going DRM-free through iTunes and other outlets.

It should be interesting to see (if this is true) how Apple handles this in the iTS. I wonder if there will be a flag for DRM-free or DRMed files.

*edit* Does anybody know what percentage of the iTunes catalog is controlled by EMI?

Is (A) Beatles songs on iTunes, (B) a Beatles iPod Special Edition and (C) EMI's songs freed from DRM too much to hope for?

We know that A) is coming eventually, it'd only make sense for (B) to follow, and WSJ is reporting (C) as fact.

I mean, really. I'm sure everybody who wants a U2 iPod has one by now (and the standard iPod is available in black, now, anyways). And is it just me, or is it really odd that the U2 iPod isn't part of PRODUCT (RED)?

Anyway, I want a Beatles iPod. And I want it to be yellow. We'll probably see a White Album-esque, all-white iPod, though. Sold alongside that damn U2 one.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

I see where you're coming from with that, but for me it seems just as bad as the shit-brown Zune. Now you can have a piss-yellow iPod to complete your bodily excretion themed MP3 players

Mr. Nicoli is so exaggeratedly polite.

(Listening to the live stream.)

Hmm.

What the heck is "twice the audio quality" anyway? How do you measure something that's almost completely subjective? Does it mean twice the bitrate? 1.5 times the bitrate? Lossless? More than two channels?

More money for DRM-free? Make your minds up, people: is DRM evil, or not? So, it's not evil....as long as you pay more money. Riiiight.

What I'm saying is: they should man up and stop selling the DRM'd files entirely. Preferably, they should sell the new type of files at the same price as the old ones. This halfway house is too complex.

29 cents more for no DRM and a little better sound quality? Keep it a 0.99 and you will sell a lot more IMHO.
