Bastards...*Mumbles* This is why I don't like being a early adopter...

But now here comes the July 7th speculation...

I guess the Schools are going have to deal and buy these new color iPods

So in other words, the new iPod is the iPod photo? And "podcast ready" isn't exactly a very new feature. So basically, nothing has changed - or am I missing something here?

Is there a software update for iPods to make them all podcastable? Does it need to be upgraded?

wow! buy any computer (as a student) and get a free iPod mini or 180 rebate off an iPod

are they trying to dump the minis?

and btw... why would podcasting require new hardware?... this seems like a marketing plug largely (advertising Podcast ready or whatever)

PHOOEY! That new 60 gig has a color screen, twice the storage, and costs $100 less than what I paid for my 30 gig.

Oh well, time for another trip to the Apple store.

Another capacity reduction! It's a nice update but remember when there used to be 20/40/60 GB iPods? And then 20/30/60? And now 20/60? Kinda funny.

justmenow: heh, your fault for paying that much extra for a color screen.

Luca, you can understand why Apple is trying to cut down on the iPod lines.

Overstatuation is one thing(Two iPod, mini and shuffle sizes is enough), and making room for Video iPods is another.

Yeah, I know it makes sense. I can't see a whole lot of people who need more than 20 GB but less than 40 GB. If you have a music collection that large, you should probably be looking at the 60 GB anyway.

Each "capacity dump" has been accompanied by fairly deep price cuts. In this case, there's only a $100 difference between the 20 GB and 60 GB models, so it wouldn't make sense to put a 40 GB model in between them for $349 or something.

I don't mean to be a weinee or anything, but...that's it? That's all today was about?

The elimination of an iPod, a nice drop on the 60GB, a $20 cut on the 1GB shuffle and a new "for students only" bundle deal?

Where's the phone?

Where's the #@&!^*% iBook?!?

Surely there's more coming (July 7?), because if today's stuff was what the big anticipated "build up" was all about...

(we need a yawning "WTF?" smiley)

Sorry...I'm just iPodded out at this point. Kinda sick of seeing them, hearing about them, being the only thing Apple truly pushes, etc.

Let's declare July 2005 "Shut Up About the iPod Already!" month, where instead of people giving up smoking or shutting off the TV, they throw their iPods into a desk drawer (or their backyard) and no one mentions them...especially Apple.

Oh weak!

I just got my iMac... so what you're saying is if you buy a Mac now as a student, you can get a free printer ($100 rebate) and a free iPod mini???
Damn... it's good to be a student!

Have you seen the iPod/car integration page?

I don't think it's a lame release at all. In fact, I think Apple's done well in both further differentiating their iPod line and pricing it accordingly.

iPod Shuffle: No Screen
iPod mini: Greyscale Screen
iPod: Colour Screen

The lower price on the 1GB Shuffle means 90% of the people won't think twice about spending and extra 30 bucks for twice the capacity. Plus, it makes it easier to transition the Shuffle to a $99 1GB and $149 2GB model next revision.

The pricepoint on the mini's are perfect imo. Not a big jump from the Shuffle for those on the fence, and and extra 2GB for $50 seems reasonable to most.

The capacities and pricepoints on the new iPods are perfect as well. Like Luca said, no need for a 40GB in the middle. You've either got a need for around 20GB or a lot more. Those that have the need for a 60GB iPod probably have a lot more music than that ripped anyways.

I'm pleased.

*disclaimer: I'm in the market for a new 'Pod so I may be overly excited with these.

So it goes.

No, they are decent updates and specs. I don't have a problem with that.

Just the "all iPod, all the time" nature of Apple sometimes...to the exclusion/neglect of the stuff they are allegedly in business for (computers...iBook? Hellooooo?).

I, too, always thought the 20/30/60 or 20/40/60 iPod line-up was goofy, and it's cool that you can now get a 20GB color, photo capable iPod for the same price I paid for my 15GB 3G model ($299). If I was wanting/needing a new iPod, that would certainly be the model for me!

The 1GB shuffle drop to $129 was nice and unexpected (would be cool if the 512MB also dropped to $79 ).

The specs and pricing are not lame at all. I guess I was just expecting a tad more. This July 7 thing might address those issues more, so I guess I shouldn't get too bent out of shape just yet (but if next week comes and goes with no significant NON-iPod/iTunes related news I am gonna have to yell and carry on just a bit).

Oh, sure. I'm not saying I'm not dissapointed that the iBooks and/or Mac mini weren't updated. I think that's completely lame, in fact. Especially with NECC going on right now.

*Whoohoo! a free iPod if I relieve Apple of one of their lame iBooks with shitty Core Image support! w00t!!*

When I say 'this was a nice update' I'm strictly talking with my iPod blinders firmly on.

So it goes.

This is a shitty update with iPod blinders on.
They basically dumped the B&W iPod and lowered the 30 gig photo's capacity. That is not an upgrade. That is a downgrade. Oh, but it's a NEW downgrade. Excuse me if I don't fall out of my chair from excitement.

Or, they gave the 20GB iPod a color screen and dropped the 60GB in price so there really wasn't room for the 30GB model anymore...

How is getting a 20GB color iPod for yesterday's price of a 20GB black and white iPod a downgrade? How is getting a 60GB iPod for $50 less a downgrade?

I guess I would have liked to see the base iPod with 30GB, too, but just because it isn't as big of an upgrade you were hoping for, doesn't mean it's a f'ing downgrade. People sometimes...

Oh, and I don't know if anybody noticed, but they dropped the price of the U2 iPod to $329 and gave it a color screen as well. That's pretty sweet - it's worth $30 for the attention-getting color alone, even if you aren't a U2 fan. Still, I think it's about time for a new iPod Special Edition...

My guess(which is based on facts) is this:
Quote:
512 was selling hot, 1GB wasn't as much=Lower 1GB price.

No one was buying the iPod Photo 30GB and the 60GB was selling ok=cut the 30GB and lower the 60GB price to boosted those sales.

U2 iPod is about to run it's limited edition=Lower price and add color to try to get the last $$$ out of that cash crossover for the Christmas season.

This all has to do with what Apple want to make sure that at Macworld, in January, they have good news to talk about when all the other news will be no so good.

Well, till they bring out the intel Mac mini and iPod Video.

Well, I'm just happy they finally lost that ridiculous iPod "photo" tag. Had to happen sooner or later. :smokey:

Next question, will they ever rename the increasingly inappropriately-titled app known as iTunes?

I have to admit that thing has stuck around a good 4-5 months longer than I ever would've imagined. Back when it came out, it meshed well with the whole "new album" and "Vertigo TV commercial" thing. It made a bit of sense in late 2004...lots of U2 buzz and hype then.

Now?

I simply thought it was a wad-shooter a good six months ago, figuring a) everyone who's THAT much of a true, diehard U2 fan (all 2,712 worldwide) bought one the first few weeks, and b) something about keeping a "special edition" (and "limited appeal") model of ANYTHING around for too long (iPod, car, golf club set, etc.) seems to water down the "special edition-ness" of said product.

IMO.

Hmmm so I was going to buy a 30gb iPod Photo to upgrade from my old 15gb ipod and now they don't do them, so either I have to pay a lot more for the 60GB one or go for a slight 5gb increase in size? Great.

How much was the 30GB iPod Photo before this? $299.00 or $349.00? 50-100 bucks is *a lot* more for twice the capacity?
