i've heard others talk about getting applecare up to one year after the hardware, and was wondering how this works. are you covered for an additional 3 years? also, if i were to buy a pb with an adc discount, could i purchase an applecare plan for it later with my educational discount?

just noticed the "applecare protection plan" thread... oops. so that answers one of my questions - the APP would be valid for 2 years if i bought it after a year. but how much would they charge me for it? could i still get an educational discount?

you won't get the DEVELOPER discount, but the EDU discount will work as long as you are enrolled at the school.

each hardware item has a different cost, laptops are more expensive than desktops. it's like car insurance.

yes, i realize that, i meant as a fraction of the 3-year cost. is it 2/3 as expensive, or more given that the likelihood of needing the plan increases with time?

The price is for the 2 extra years of hardware support... which is a fixed cost depending on the hardware line. The phone support beyond the 90 days is free. Regardless of when you buy the plan, you are still getting the same service for the same price. There is no "discount" if you buy it sooner or later, but you DO have to buy it before the original one year warranty runs out. Your EDU store will have a cheaper AppleCare price as well. Usually more then 10%, unlike the hardware. So instead of the $349 you would pay for PB AppleCare retail, it will probably come out to $289 or so IIRC.

I don't see a need to have both threads going.

Here's the one that was already active.

Cheers.
