I'm trying to clear out, and standardize, a bunch of video files I've had on my PB for years.

One of the chores involves clipping small segments out of much larger .mpg files. Instead of keeping a 1-hour, 400MB file, I'd like to just clip out the much smaller parts that are worth saving.

I know QuickTime Pro does the above, but I don't own Pro. In this year-old thread, MPEG Streamclip is recommended. Is that still the best (free) option for the above? If not, what is?

Thanks very much.

MPEG Streamclip is a good choice if you don't want QTP.

Even with the Pro registration, QuickTime Player still doesn't properly handle saving/exporting muxed MPEG-1 files, last I checked.

MPEG Streamclip is still, sadly, probably your best choice.

Thanks for the feedback.

Brad - When you say "sadly," does that mean MPEG Streamclip is going to yield lower-quality results, or just that it's sad that Apple's own Pro software doesn't do this successfully? Thanks.

I suspect the "sadly" is because, while functional, MPEG Streamclip isn't the most user-friendly or elegant interface.

It is pretty rough around the..well the whole thing actually. It's very effective though.
