I'm with Ken on this one. The government (any government) shouldn't be dictating the connector used in a product. Next they will dictate what screen is acceptable to be used. What button is allowed to be used. What physical size it can be.
No government should be dictating specifics for products like this. Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. Last time I checked a device doesn't just stop working just because a new one comes out. Maybe I'm the outsider here, but I see buying a new phone every year far more wasteful the one cable that gets changed every 4-5 years. |

Apparently Apple has publicly said they will be moving to USB-C. While this isn't a surprise to anyone, it is more odd that Apple acknowledges this publicly before the new iPhone with USB-C is released.
Personally, I would have switched back to the 30-pin dock adapter just to flip off the EU for trying to mandate what they produce. Apple is pre-announcing this so they can get ahead of the complaint-brigade. There will be hundreds of millions of customers complaining because all of their Lightning cables have to be thrown into the landfill, and Apple wants to make sure the EU government gets the blame.

Apple didn’t pre-announce anything. Joz was asked whether Apple will comply with the legislation, and he said they will.

Well, that is kinda announcing it. I mean, unless there is a loophole in the law/mandate that Apple will get around having to switch to USB-C.

It also isn’t saying when. I believe the mandate doesn’t come in for a few more years. Apple doesn’t have to do it for 2023 iPhones for example.

Of course, Apple's solution could be to skip the port altogether by then and force wireless and really piss off the EU by forcing another proprietary charing option that isn't a port at all.

Apple will have to adjust the EU lineup so that the only phone they offer will be the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 (whichever is first to USB-C, and I suspect that will be 2023's iPhone 15). All other iPhones will be illegal to sell. Thus, there will be a short period (2-3 years) where there will be no "low-end" iPhone available in the EU. So, there will be a crap-ton of legally-forced, incompatible, electronic waste*, and iPhones will be more expensive. * This is assuming that Apple will not include a Lightning to USB-C adapter in the box. They won't, because that would just be more waste. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. Only products released after the law comes into effect have to meet the standard. It’s in all the press releases.

So Apple announces their last lightning iPhone 24 hours before the law goes into effect and gets another year.
