1996 - first I had to visit a friend of my parents to check webpages, later in our public libraries you were allowed restricted access (for example no hotmail or chatting).
Round about 1998 we had our own connection. |

1997. I was about 28 years old. Had an AOL account and a USRobotics 28.8 modem (who didn't?).
I loved hearing that "You've got mail!" voice when I connected/logged on. Meant I had something to read. Eventually dropped AOL and got Earthlink DSL around 2000 or so. Went to cable in mid-2001 and been using it (Cox in San Diego, Comcast in Chattanooga) ever since. I've had my current .Mac e-mail since the very beginning (iTools), and it's been my e-mail address since 2001, over 3-4 moves and a two ISPs. I like that. |

1994 - I was 17. I had a super fast 28.8 modem. Used Mosaic on my old LC630.
It may have been 1995, I can't remember. But I'm sure I was in grade 12. Quote:

Around 1996 so I was like 14 or 15.
I remember when I discovred mp3. I downloaded a Pennywise song and it took me like 2-3 hours. I was amazed by the quality/file size ratio. lol There was some add on tv for some internet provider. They were calling it "The highway of information". With 28.8, it was more a totally jammed highway Do you guys remember some cool stuff like the first time you heard about google, hotmail, msn ? I do. I find it funny to think about it now. Dave Mustaine :"God created whammy bars for people who don't know how to solo." |

I remember having to ask AOL to send me 4 777k floppies for my Macintosh SE to get on internet.
And to download SuperClock! took 4 hours! The best memories were the chatroom, which was relatively fun and was more neater than nowadays. They actually ding anyone who mutters "fuck", and three dings, you're off the account. |

1999. I was 16, and I had a 56k dial up connection with Freeserve (remember them anyone? I think they became Wanadoo and then Orange Broadband). It was on my first PC, a Cyrix (remember them! hehe) PR233MX with 32MB of RAM, a 3.2 gig Hard Drive, and I was still using Windows 95 at the time.

1997. Or was it 1998? Nevertheless, it was a great moment, although it was just for my parents email I believe. I don't think I really got into the web until about 2001 when it was fast at school. We got broadband at home in about 2004 I believe.

1993, when CompuServe started allowing access to the 'Net using Mosaic. I was on my super speedy 2400bps MODEM at the time.

Relating to all this, you know what the funniest thing to do is? Go rent that Sandra Bullock movie "The Net" and check out the hipster Internet slang and graphics showcased there.
I'm sure, at the time, it was top-notch, cutting edge stuff...animated gifs of a talking skull and flames and so forth. But it's painful - in a funny kinda way - to see now. |

i'm starting to feel like a dinosaur with Social Networking sites like MySpace and Friendster..... to me that's like the IRC of today and I'm quite over it already.... i'm sure by the time I was online the BBSers saw IRC in the same light as well.
even better than the net was WarGames with matthew broderick |

I saw 'Hackers' on the teevee last month in a time-filler spot. Completely horrible, but oh so funny.

1990 for me. I was still 15 then and I started a BBS using WWIV software. It was cool being a SysOp and running my board that had two sides, one that was free and open to the world and one that was used to wearing a patch over one eye with a parrot on it's shoulder. I had much fun with this and modded my code using C++. I learned a lot about C++ during that time until I took my board down in 1992 when I went active Navy and turned 18.
I was connected with both, WWIVnet and WWIVlink. I thought about FIDOnet, but steered away from it. ASCII bombs were my favorite. Remap their keyboard and they wouldn't know what to do until they rebooted. It was great! We had one with a Turkey on it that said "Gobble gobble, there goes your hard drive." All it did was remap the keyboard and annoy the user. It was funny though! Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. One who does not vote has no right to complain.” Visit our archived Minecraft world! | Maybe someday I'll proof read, until then deal with it. |

As for the internet, I cant really remember when I joined. It was either 1995 or 96. It was right around when I was in 5th-6th grade. I had AOL for the longest time on slow ass dial up and then in HS I switched to adelphia cable internet and was blown away and havent looked back since. Die young and save yourself.... @yontsey |

1997. AOHell. Floppy disks. Toshiba Infiniti, the one with the big ass monitor with an LCD panel under the screen and giant tower speakers.
Was on AOHell until about Fall 2004, when I finally dumped that POS service for AT&T Worldnet dialup. Had that until I got RoadRunner in June 2005. |

I don't remember exactly when I went online for the first time. I know I started working with HTML 9 years ago last month, so I guess we probably got Web access the previous year. I would have been 11 or 12 at the time.
Our first computer was a custom-built one my Mom bought to do her grad school work on. Our next one was an Acer. I used that until I finally got my own eMachine in 8th grade. I was so proud of that thing. I can still remember the day I upgraded it to 96 MB RAM. I thought I was the shit. |

Was there anyone else here on e•World? I always liked the interface with the little buildings and all. The first time they served up WWW access was the first time I checked out the net. Before that it was BBS.

I think I was five when we first got a computer. I can still remember picking up that Packard Bell at Sears.
I'm not quite sure we had internet access on it, though. That might have been right after we moved, which would have made it 1996. (BTW, can I mod change my vote to '96? I didn't remember this till after I voted). So, I would have been six years old. We had MSN and I remember going online after school to play some quiz game on MSN's website. |

I'm not 100% sure. I know it was before I started uni in 1995, but after I got my second Amiga 1200, possibly 1989/1990. (I voted 1992)
OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available! |
