I want a video camera to get some experience in shooting and editing videos. I'm willing to spend up to $200, but I can't tell what's good or not. I have a 15'' powerbook g4, so all applicable ports would need to be compatible (firewire 400 and 800, usb 2.0, etc.). Any suggestions?

Increase your budget. I don't think you'll get a miniDV camera new for $200.

Here's the only miniDV camera I could find for under $200:

Here's a little more info on the store:

Their Reseller Rating is fairly poor, but they have decent reviews at Froogle:

Personally, I'd spend a bit more and buy from a reputable seller. Here's the cheapest miniDV camera from NewEgg:

I'll sell you my Panasonic GS-150 for $200. It's a really good camera - it was one of the first consumer 3 CCD camcorders (the "current" GS-180 model is basically the same camera with a widescreen LCD) and it's in good shape, kept in a case, etc.

I don't mean to spam. It's just...well, you're probably not going to get a new MiniDV camera for under $200. Not a decent one, anyway.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

search for a canon ZR800, it's widescreen and can be found on sale for 250 or so.
I've had one in my backpack for a couple of months and I like it.

search on new egg and it comes up 259, although the one fcgriz links to above and is the zr830 for 10 bucks more has more bells and whistles. I think I got mine for 199 (net) from dell at christmas on sale and a 50 buck rebate.
