Well my nearly 3 year old eMac keeps crashing and it only started today. Its a 1GHz G4, with 512Mb RAM (the same ram has been in it for the 3 years too, 256Mb of Apple RAM and 256Mb of Crucial RAM) its got an 80Gb Maxtor HDD which according to the smart status is fine.

I've also run the hardware test cd and everything came back fine, but it keeps doing it. First time It kernel panicked with the usual grey screen with the writing in different languages but now it just black screens and refuses to do anything.

Does anyone have any ideas? Has it happened to anyone? Or what does it sound like to you? Please help as this thing is my baby, having owned it from new, I really don't wanna have to replace it! If I do god forbid it'd be replaced with a PC as I just can't afford a replacement Mac!

What apps are you running when it does it the most?

Also what system version are you running?

Do the crash logs point to anything?

I'm running 10.4.8, (Also just done an archive install and it still keeps doing it). The last time it did it I was running BitRocket, iTunes and XChat-Aqua. And Safari.

From the Genius Bar sticky at:
http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=24
Quote:
"Basic Troubleshooting" should consist of following the steps below first. Please make sure you've tried all these before starting a thread seeking help for general stability, startup, or performance issues. Details for each procedure listed can be found below.

Repairing permissions
Repairing your Hard Drive
Clearing the Caches
Resetting or "Zapping" the PRAM
Open Firmware & Resetting NVRAM
Rebuilding the Launch Services
Updating/redoing Application Prebinding
Safe Boot
If you've done ALL that and still have total system crashes, you might need to try to isolate any bad RAM.

Remove one stick and try running for a while and see if you crash. IF so, remove the other stick. You may also try swapping the RAM into a different slot.

With enough trial-and-error, you can determine if a specific stick, or specific slot, is bad.

Would it really be the RAM considering its been the same for the last 3 years without any trouble?

It's not highly likely but it is definitely possible - I've seen it happen several times, with both Apple and 3rd party RAM.

Plus, it's a much easier test than a motherboard swap.

Swaping the Ram is worth a try i know when i first bought my Mac it worked fine for a while and then i started to get kernel panics, I read about swaping the ram in the ram slotsand have not had a problem since. its worth a try.

Just like any other Apple part, an Apple mouse can "go bad" for no apparent reason.

Time to try another mouse for a while!

Are you serious??? A mouse that

a; breaks internally before the buttons/eye/wheel/ball/connector go bad?
b; completely crashed the system?

I can honestly say that I have never, ever, heard of that.

Wow.

edit; good idea though, about the changing of the mouse and all...

ah..

It seems to me now that the problem is not in the mouse, but in some borked USB drivers.

sorry.
