Oh boy, I wasn't doing anything hardcore and then things got slow and choppy then a window popped up and said you must restart your computer now. After I restarted and logged back in a message came up and said. "Mac Os X unexpectedly crashed would you like to send a report to apple?

WHY Would this happen? What should i do, nothing? It works fine now. Does this happen much? ahhh

You experienced a kernel panic. That's when there's a crash at the lowest level of the operating system and is not recoverable.

Apple KBase article #106227: What's a kernel panic?

No, this does not happen often. I fewer kernel panics than I can count on one hand throughout the whole course of 10.3.x (on four Macs I use regularly) and I'm quite the power user, adding and running and killing things like mad in the Terminal that probably aren't 100% kosher.

When you rebooted, you got that message because the kernel was able to log some information about the crash before it totally went kaput. Like when an application crashes, this is an opportunity to send that log back to Apple so the engineers can pick it apart and try to fix whatever bug caused it.

The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The only way to guarantee thoughtful, informative discussion is to write thoughtful, informative posts. AppleNova is not a real-time chat forum. You have time to compose messages and edit them before and after posting.

That being said, if it's the only one you get, you should be fine. However, they're rare enough that if a new machine KP's more than once, I'd say it's time to run a hardware check on it.

Usually (over 80% of the time in my experience) KP's are caused by bad hardware, and most of that is bad RAM.

In 3.5 years of running various versions of OS X, I have never had a kernel panic. I have had individual applications bug out very occasionally - disproportionately, these involved applications running on Classic - but I have never had, to my knowledge, a crash on the level of a kernel panic.

Admittedly I am not a 'power' user, but from my perspective - the perspective of an ordinary user - OS X has been rock solid.

if it happens again in the next 6 months, run the hardware check and post the results here. otherwise don't worry about it.

Well after reading these messages then I guess I should ask about my crashes. I have had about 6 since I got my Mac the 18th of March. Since I have been so used to my PC locking up I thought it was normal. My wife said Mac's should be more stable but I had no idea. They were spread out over the different versions of OSX (10.3.8-10.4.1). I will say that the normal state for my little mini is to have about 9 programs running at one time. (Mail, Safari, Handbreak, iCal, iTunes, MissingSync, QT7Pro, Folding@Home, etc...) I do video and audio editing. I think I might be doing a bit much for the mini, but it was my first chance to get away from WinXP. Any ideas? I'll keep an eye out for another one and try to better document what happens since this *shouldn't* be normal.

Edit: This is my panic.log

The only thing I have upgraded was the RAM. I put the 1GB in myself and got it from OWC which seemed reputable enough. The external drive has changed from USB2.0 to the Firewire I now have on there.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but if you say that all you did was upgrade the ram, then that might be your problem. Because the hardware was bad, doesn't mean that your RAM isn't from a reputable company. I'd just say that you bought a bad stick of RAM. Although there are a number of possibilities. (I could totally be wrong on this, so please check with others, that was just my educated guess)

Is that a dancing happy Mac on the screen!?! Why is he happy if he just crashed? Does he actually dance when that gibberish is on the screen?

The screen is actually really hot when you get a crash like that and he's dancing to stop his feet blistering!

Or perhaps it's an Irish Jig in honour of being silly enough to take out a component like that when the computer is on!!!!!

Can I ask what part of you thought it would be a good idea to do that?
