is there any software that can show me hard disk access? like a blinking icon in the dock or something? i still would like the sleep light to show hard drive access

Yup. MenuMeters is good.
 I use it for its network access and CPU-usage options.DiskSpy is another app that works similarly. Note on that page that "DiskSpy" is free and "DiskSpy Solid" is not.
