I hads some port firstand then put soems icre ccrewam of buter pecan with rum in it and then it was good. the bu but then I pusts in some coka aAHNND !!! AND IT went to the foama Like that speamndle foam that gcomes up!! a bunch!! it was like a foams then I pustin rhe rum. it was good. |

This is what I was talking about last night... In case you can't translate my entry I was explaining how I had poured some rum on a bit of butter pecan ice cream, eaten it, then decided to make a rum and coke in the same mug without washing it out first. The result was, I suppose, like making a "Coke Float". The fizzy cola shot into the trace of cream at the bottom of the mug and foamed up into a very stiff, foamy mass. I don't think any actual reaction occurred, but it is possible that the milk fats and other solids came out of solution when the acidic and significantly less alcoholic coke was added. The evanescence (bubbling) caused the resulting suspension to froth over. As to why it is stiff, the alcohol in the rum may have slowed the precipitation of the fats etc thus leading to a more gradual phase change and larger aggregates when the coke was added, but this is all a guess. |

I think you can only get it in Ireland. I don't know a whole lot about whiskey, but I know that I really really like this. A lot. Not knowing any whiskey vocabulary, I'd call it 'bright' or 'clean' or something. It apparently got great reviews in some important whiskey reference. New additions:
Springbank 12yr Fino Sherry Glen Ord 12y (Signatory single-cask bottling) Glenlivet 16yr Nadurra "Triumph" Glen Ord, not much to say. Speyside character (though technically Highlands). Sweet, yellow/green fruits, malt. Needs water. Springbank I have a love-hate relationship with. Every Springbank starts out tasting like burnt matches, rubber, and then some of the best whisky flavors you will ever experience. Cheesecake with berry glaze. I was only able to obtain the one bottle, so tasting it will have to wait.
It's basically a standard 55ppm phenol Ardbeg that has been aged for >10 years in new heavily charred American white oak barrels. I suspect the char actually filters out some of the strongest flavors, so it might taste more malty and less peaty. Since the barrel hasn't been used up by another spirit, there should also be plenty of vanilla and honey (sugar/molasses/"sweet") from the wood to go around. Funny, I bought it because it's pretty cheap and I like it. I didn't use any of the fancy descriptions the guy in that video uses. I just thought people bought it because it was one of the cheaper ones in the store. Now I can feel all uppity instead of all trailer trash when I buy this shit? Sweet. Ralfy is pretty much the most famous amateur whisky personality in the Scotch whisky universe at the moment. He does tend to go overboard in describing the flavor of whatever he's drinking.
I've gone back and forth between high-rye whiskies. The rye really is overwhelming. |

I opened a bottle of the 12 yr Laphroaig (downstairs), and my wife (who was upstairs) thought I was cleaning auto parts in the living room or something. This stuff is so different it really shouldn't be called scotch. Maybe the gallic word for smoke might be better... By the way, it has taken four years to get through HALF of my bottle.
