Is registration mandatory for people to read threads?

I ask because I have sent a few links out to some friends for the past few days and they have asked for l/p information (I don't expect them to register)... is this just an isolated glitch, did someone flip a switch to help fix this, or has this become policy for some other reason?

AppleNova has always been "open" to the public.

The only restrictions on unregistered users are that they cannot view attachments, profiles, the members list, the calendar, and searches. This is the standard vBulletin setting.

I think it looks closed since if you aren't registered, all the "apple" icons by the forums show up as locks.

I was away over the summer during the mass migration, came back, heard about AN, came here, and thought it was an old relic that was out of commission, and had long since been dead. It was only a few months later that I saw it come up again at AI that I came over here and realized what really went down.

FYI, I was (I guess I still am) bauman over at AI.com.

Actually, we may let guests read attachments. I don't see why they shouldn't be able to here...
