Wii nee Revolution

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

"Wii has a distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolises both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's not really about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything.
TBH I don't keep up with consoles at all. But I thought that this was interesting. Really pushing the cuddly, social, USP side of things aren't they?

I think nintendo has the right idea, games should be easily accessible, fun, creative and not require an intense commitment to enjoy. Though I liked the name 'revolution' better.

This is absolutely the most retarded thing I've ever heard. This is ten times worse than renaming the "PowerBook" the "MacBook Pro," no... make that a hundred.

Who wants to sit in front of their TV holding a stick controller about six inches long, playing with their Wii?

What the FUCK Nintendo? I'm not sure I can buy one with that name, it's so bad.

EDIT: Ars thread (just to pull in some other peoples' thoughts on this).

Stupidest name I've ever heard. Amazing. I already thought this thing was strange as hell, now it's dumb as hell too. I had to read a story to figure out what the fuck the name was. That's not "intuitive" at all, Nintendo. It's completely stupid.

I really like that name. Nintendo is going a very different direction than Microsoft and Sony.

Upsides:

* Hilariousness at E3 whenever Japanese suits attempt to pronouce "Wii".
* Better than "Nintendo Manjuice"

Downsides:

* Everything else.

I don't dislike the name really, but I think revolution was better. Ultimately, if the system is even a quarter as good as it sounds, the name really won't matter.

I mean, all said and done "playstation" is a really stupid name too. "x-box" "gamecube"...etc.

Nintendo is trying to let go of that idea that a console can only be enjoyed by leet gamer nerds. They want to make it more accessible to everyone, and while leet gamer nerds will make fun of the name "Wii" all day, they aren't exactly a benchmark of who will actually enjoy the product.

I really like where Nintendo is coming from, they are the only company that seems to understand what gaming is.

Who actually uses "wee" to refer to urine and/or penises?

"Revolution" is a cool name, but it's not a fun name, it's not a friendly name, it's far more aggressive than it needs to be and far more aggressive than the product itself.

Retarded beyond words. Wait, I take that back: it's possible to express how retarded this is in words. "Wii".

What kind of revolution is this? So many men ALREADY play with their Wii in front of the television!

People that want to make much ado about nothing. Now... if they had called it the Nintendo Wiz, I'd be a little bit annoyed.

Yep, this is pissing me off.

Oh, come on. When I first heard that MS was going to call their console "XBox" i thought they had released their internal concept name by mistake. They really called that thing XBox. Is that descriptive, or what? A box that does X. Yeah, I know, you fill in the X yourself, how postmodern.

Whenever Nintendo releases something, people are all over it for how stupid it is, and how the Revolution/Wii is so much less powerful than the 360 or the PS3. So the whining in this thread is not surprising.

But you know what? Nintendo is the only one actually reaching out to non-gamers. The DS Lite is selling like crazy, and not just to boys, but to men and women of all ages. The Wii will do the same thing, because it will have much more universal appeal than a black box with a green "alien eye" that you can only play FPSs on.

Wii is fine with me. And in a month, nobody will care about the name anymore. Just like with the MBP.

anything would be cooler than Wii.

however, I'm more concerned with how it plays than what it's called.

Nerds will get riled up and angry over nothing. Gaming nerds are almost as bad as Mac nerds.

What Nintendo system owners don't just refer to their console as "my Nintendo"?

I usually say, "I'm going to play Gamecube". I guess by the end of the year I'll be saying, "I'm going to play with my Wii"

You don't say "MY Gamecube" but you would say "MY Wii?" isn't the joke old yet?

And still, who wants to know about what you're doing with your gamecube.

Not really, I just heard about the name change so I still think the opportunities for humor in the name are endless.

Just using it as an example. He said most people say, "my Nintendo" but I tend to say, "my Gamecube". No, I don't often tell people what I plan on doing with my Gamecube, but when I do, that's what happens.
