A client of mine is opening a whisky bar speakeasy type place and is trying to come up with a name.

Anyone have a suggestion?

That's a lot more than I thought of.

Thanks.

They initially went with "The 86", as in "86" like the restaurant term for cutting an item off of the menu and they were going to have 86 different whiskeys on the shelf.

However, they were due to open at the end of March, right as COVID shut down everything in NYC, so it hasn't opened and I'm not sure if it's going to at this point.

No more Twitter. It's Mastodon now.

Hmmm …

I spent 15 years in the restaurant industry, and I'm not too sure that naming a bar after something you're out of makes a lot of sense.

You and me both. I thought it was a terrible name, even with the concept of having 86 different whiskeys.

I never knew that giving something the 86 was a restaurant exclusive term... I don't have time to research this stuff, people! I didn't even have time to write THIS except I was pooping!!

::everyone looks back at all my previous posts, wondering...::

It's not exclusive to that industry, but that's where I know it from. Mostly from people getting thrown out of the bar.

"What happened to Drew?"

"Drew? Oh, he got eighty-sixed!"

"What a dumb ass! I told him to stop pinching the waitress on the butt."

I would be afraid that I'd attract all the locals that had been 86'd from every other bar in town, thinking that we were letting them know it was a safe haven for ruffians. I guess that could be your plan...

I've heard a few different explanations of where the term came from, but my favorite is that it started as Cockney rhyming slang. Not sure the whole rhyme scheme but the idea is that '86' rhymes with 'nix'.

i thought i used to have a signature
