Hello, I just received a brand new ibook G4 1.33 GHz by post. Everything's fine except i can't connect the internet. Here is what it says "Built-in Ethernet is currently active. Built-in Ethernet has a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
Is there any known network issue with 10.4.2? ps: on the able beside that new iBook i have an older one, running 10.3.5 connected to the net right now... using the usual authomatic DHCP settings. Strange that one machine works and one doesn't (same cable, same settings...) I even tried reinstalling Tiger but it didn't help. Thank you for any help. |

Might be a dumb question but have you tried unplugging your cable/dsl modem to reset it? Most modems of this sort only allow it to be linked to one physical MAC address at a time, so if you had it previously plugged into your old ibook without resetting, it may be that simple.

thank you. yes i tried
the Mac OS version is 10.4.2, AHT version 2.5 is it worth installing an older version? i don't know maybe my isp don't support the latest osx? it's cable connection, so i don't have any modem in the house, just plug to the wall... |

no, the version of os x doesn't matter.
how do you not have a modem? |

well no modem needed where i live. you just plug you ethernet cable to the wall. that's it. i reinstalled Tiger from scratch, so now i'm almost sure it's a system issue. computer is new, system is fresh & clean.
the problem is that i can't try with an older os. what can i do? |

edit: whoops, didn't see the bit about your previous computer.
That's very odd. Try putting in the network addresses and things statically to be exactly the same as the DHCP is serving to the other machine (IP address, router, subnet mask, and DNS). It won't work permanently, but it might work temporarily to show that the network interface actually works. Last edited by staph : 2005-08-04 at 05:52. |

Try connecting the 2 iBooks with each other and test if you can build an afp network.
In that case you can make sure the new computer's ethernet port is not broken. |

Thank you all. I feel better now that i know it's not a harware problem (i tried the iBook on different networks). I spoke with my ISP and they will reset the number of MAC address allowed asap. Apparently they limit this number to 5. Sorry for bringing ISP issues here and thank you all for your help!!!

Hi,
I just wanted you to know that I too received my new 14.1" 1.42 and I had the same issue, so I assigned an IP address manually that I knew was not in use from my router and wallah! I had internet. If you don't have a router, just input the info manually. Worth a shot. |
