I read about this in a tuba forum where a discussion had turned to Mac (partly my fault.. lol)

Quote:
Ah, the times they are a changin'. Yesterday, I got a call from a friend with a Mac who was in a panic. She'd received an email that pretty much rendered her system unusable (and no, she didn't even open it--it kicked in when she tried to delete it). Thing grabbed the cursor and wouldn't let go--you couldn't select or click on anything. I was able to restart her system and go in manually and clobber the message in her inbox sufficiently for her to delete it.

She was running OS X, but I didn't get the version. The attachment to the email was about 30K long.

OTOH, it's the first time I've ever seen this sort of thing happen with a Mac, so folks is getting cleverer...
Anyone else heard about something like this lately?

How big was the email? I've had occasional problems with Mail locking up after receiving a huge email -- e.g., an email with a multi-MB attachment. Otherwise, I'm not aware of anything that could have locked up her system simply by opening an email.

Edit -- Just noticed the attachment was only 30k. If that's the case, then not sure what to tell you. Could have just been a coincidence; a random system crash that appeared to be caused by the email.

Sometimes when Mail has a problem connecting to a server I've found it hangs if you try and do something else with it at the same time.

Would a message or attachment try to connect to a server?

Well, hmm, it would if it were trying to load images, wouldn't it? I have Mail set to not display images in HTML messages, so I don't encounter extra activity like that.

When I said "connect to server" I meant connect to the email server to get new messages. Sorry.

That's alright, I got your meaning.

But, some HTML messages would try to connect to a server to load images & stuff. If they can't locate anything, they'll hang, just like a crapped-out page in a web browser.

I wonder if that's what happened in this case.

Nope.

Mail simply doesn't execute scripts like the dreaded MS Outlook Express does.

My money is on it being a fluke or just a rarely-encountered bug.
