Discovery is fueled up and ready to fly. Had a launch abort during the 5 minute countdown hold Thursday night due to weather, but things are looking a little better for tonight. Launch time scheduled for 8:47 PM US Eastern Time. First night launch since 2002. |

I am still trying to wrangle being able to skydive during a launch.... One of my ambitions...

Are you going to post the video again this time? PLEASE? I still don't have cable, or TV for that matter.

Yep, I'll be recording off CNN and Youtubing/Uploading the video shortly after the launch.

Thanks, I would love the direct link for it. I still have the high res and low res ones from the last launch.

Hopefully this one goes up. I have a pretty clear look at the shuttle from my backyard when they launch, a night launch would be a great view. Especially if it stays clear like it currently is.

The weather is still holding with the only potential issue being a crosswind at the emergency landing facility. The crew just arrived at the pad.

So what do you do when you're strapped into a chair for hours on end waiting to actually launch? I'm guessing he naps, though he might be on such an adrenaline rush he can't. Pray your last prayers just in case?

There are built in hold times for every launch. Seems odd doesn't it?

Is there any easy way to record video off that stream without expensive software or Snapz?

The weather outlook has just taken a major swing in the positive direction. The latest forecast from weather officer Kathy Winters predicts only a 30 percent chance of violating the launch rules tonight. The change is mostly due to the optimism that winds won't be gusting high enough to break the crosswind limit. http://spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts116/status.html |

They've exited the T-20:00 hold, now counting down to the T-9:00 hold, which will hold to sync up with the final continuous 9-minute countdown to launch at 8:47.

Yeah, this last 45 minute hold is a long time. Imaging being the pilot and needing to go to the bathroom!

Weather checking aircraft are continuing to report that it's a great night for a launch. 20 minutes left in the T-9:00 hold according to NASA TV.

My heart races with excitement every time I get to see this happen. I actually enjoy the buildup to the launch too.

Update: 26 minutes remaining in the 9:00 hold.
Getting close. Weather continues to be fine, no technical issues, everything is green. |

Same deal as back in 2001 -- I should be seeing it (if I'm lucky!) around 6-7 minutes after launch at less than a fist's height above the horizon around ESE. Eight minutes and 50-odd seconds from now. I should get on the roof and set up the camera for some test shots. |
