As a photographer that just switched to digital from medium format I am curious as to what you think the rumored "Pro Photo" app will be.

I did a search yesterday and no one really has much info, it was speculated though that it expands on the current iphoto capabilities instead of trying to compete against adobe products.

I am kinda excited to see though because I already make use of iphoto's image correction facilities a good bit just because of it's ease of use. a suite of more useful tools including compositing etc is my hope for the new app.

has anyone heard of a price point yet?

My main requirement to consider it is for it to intergrate seamlessy with the current iphoto app or replace it altogether, its really nice having all of the tools in one program, editor organizer etc.

I would also like to see intergrated upload tools to all the major online photo communities, flickr, fotki etc...I know there are third party apps for this but it would be nice if they were intergrated

Yeah, I too am excited about this app. I would really a program that has everything in it. Basically iView media pro mixed with adobe elements features is what I'm expecting and hoping for. Maybe apple will include more editing features. I would like to not to have to use iPhoto AND Photoshop. If apple sells this for < $200 they will have my money imediatly, other wise I will have to wait a little.

I have a feeling it will be high end, but I don't think they can charge more than iView media pro's $199.

Think Secret posted some details on Photoshop CS3 shortly after CS 2 was released and they included a pic of an unannounced Pro Photo app from Apple. I guess this is the product they will be announcing along with PowerMacs and PowerBooks.

I hope this app see's the light of day. I am also wishing Apple would come out with a 3D application now that Maya will be part of Autodesk. Apple can always buy NewTek, Modo, and others. Apple needs it's own photo and 3d applications.

It would be nice to have a full-featured Photo app thats somewhere in between iPhoto and Photoshop (but leaning more to the Photoshop side) thats not rediculously expensive.

It kinda leads back to all those discussions we have had about prosumer apps from Apple. But I will take a pro photo app for now.

Man, Apple already went and killed Adobe Premier, which I thought was better (at the time) than Final Cut Pro. Now they're after Photoshop?

EDIT: You can say "Oh but it's not targeted at Photoshop" all you want, but that's not how Adobe's going to see it.

But seriously, what is going to happen? Photoshop is too big to be derailed by something that Apple comes out with and Adobe isnt going to leave all of the pro photographers using macs in the cold.

I say bring it on. If nothing else, the competition will be better for both companies.

hopefully, it will light a fire under adobe's collective A$$ to speed up the IntelMac versions of CS3! If I was apple I'd build Motion into a After Effects killer and PhotoPro into a Photoshop killer.... that is if adobe doesn't speed up... I'd hate to loose photo, illust and AE......

Managing photographic files is vastly different than editing them.

Photoshops strength is image editing. Apple's Photo Pro could be an app that is primarily focused on managing photo images.

Apple is not coming out with a Photoshop competitor and Motion 2 is not a direct competitor to After Effects.

I do think this new one will be more of an "iPhoto on the juice" product, with some organization and management features geared toward larger outfits. And a smattering of quick-editing tools and features. But nothing truly Photoshop level.

You have to figure that there are lots of "in between" folks out there, sporting digital cameras and scanners. They'd like a bit more than iPhoto has to offer, but aren't about to drop $600-plus on Photoshop. And Apple can probably build something every bit as nice (or more so) and functional as Elements.

If anything, this is probably a Photoshop Elements competitor, but with some nice cataloging/searching features and legendary Apple ease-of-use and slickness (it'll know what you're wanting to take a picture of, days before, and do it for you ).

Take one iPhoto. Combine it some performance enhancers. Stir in Adobe Elements and Photo Album. Sprinkle some Apple magic dust. Throw in two dashes of eye candy, a rounded spoonful of something we've not yet thought of and a pinch of RDF. Season to taste.

I am speaking only for myself and have no specific info, but I can tell you that a very, very small group of people had knowledge -at the time of that story- of any features that might go into Photoshop CS3. And none of them are people who would give TS rumor info. Most likely someone with knowledge of a prior version, just made guesses and sent the info to TS.

As for what Apple might do; I think sooner or later they will enter that fray, it's just a question of at which price point.

I really doubt that. There will be big demand for it, so the odds of Apple bundling a pro photo app with FCS -at the same price- is almost nill IMHO.

It would be nice though, I agree. I suspect if they do release a pro type app that is anywhere near the Photoshop ballpark, you're going to pay $399 for it at least, maybe more like $599.

What is needed that photoshop doesn't do, or do so easily, and would be of use to a photographer.

1. Cataloguing/organizing
2. Noise removal
3. RAW conversion
4. Black and white conversion
5. Up-res for print

Now it does the latter three if you have technique, or an appropriate accessory app, or care to delve into the controls, but all are more time consuming than they need to be.

You take a pic, you've shot RAW because you want to extract as much detail as possible. A good RAW converter that really pulls out the shadow details is needed. There's actually quite a difference between different software here. Next, you want to clean it and up-res. You would use something like noise ninja on your image, and then possibly up-res it in small increments or use genuine fractals on it. Or perhaps you want a black and white pic? You might get into the channel mixer, or perhaps you've automated an action, but why all the hassle? How about a new channel mixer. Something flexible enough to let me play with the levels, but also automated in such a way that it automagically breaks the image down into RGB and L layers and allows me to blend them that way, but also gives a few different film looks -- contrasty, wide tonal range, faux infrared, etc etc...

Could be useful to have something where you click convert, pick a print size, juggle a few black and white levels, hit noise reduction, and out comes an image ready for print, or further adjustment in the editor of your choice. Might be useful to also have some print managing (different printer and perhaps paper profiles?)

Perhaps not something to be thought of as an image editor, more of a photo developer.

Interesting point Matsu, although Photoshop has gotten better at noise removal and sharpening, and I suspect will continue to do so as Smart Sharpen and Remove Noise evolve (both of those are "1.0" functions as of CS2). Up-res? Meh. If you just bicubic smoother on a sharp, well-exposed shot or use ACR to up-res, you can make beautiful large-format prints.

But in general I like the concept of a digital developer app. Sort of cut out the effects. What would be needed aside from the functions you mention are robust curves and levels, basic layering, batch processing, and something akin to the Blend If command.

Besides organizing photos, what if the new app brings Core Image filters to Photoshop? Perhaps the new app returns the results as a smart object and stores the original layer for later editing. I know this isn't a perfect system, but it would give the Mac platform an advantage with Photoshop. Core Image is supposed to be a huge advantage, but it is just not being used. If Adobe ever uses it, it will be after Microsoft offers their version, and the advantage has evaporated.

Guess who I wasn't. ;)
