Synchronization between PowerBook and iMac

Back in the day of owning several Windows machines, I could fairly easily set-up synchronization of "My Documents" on client machines with "My Documents" on a server. This was nice as I had physical copies of the files on the clients (laptop, desktop, etc) as well as on a server. The synchronization would occur anytime I logged in from the client.
Now, I currently have a household with an iMac and a PowerBook. It would be nice to have the ability to synchronize particular folders (for particular users) to the iMac. I know there are some payware utilities for this, but is there a way to accomplish this using Automator for free?
Hey, I'm a reasonable guy. But I've just experienced some very unreasonable things. - Jack Burton
