Got a 1.25 mhz Mini and after dissassemblying I realized there must be a better way of cooling this puppy. I'd like to try overclocking. I'm not going to be using the case - so height is not an issue. What about a heatpipe style heatsink that elevates the heatsink off motherboard? Or could I cool the existing heatsink with a better fan?

Man, have you looked into what's required to OC Macs? It's not like what you do with your Windows box running on an Asus board. Apple makes sure it's not easy, and even having the option to overclock often involves soldering on the motherboard. Maybe that's changed in the last two years, but I know prior to that it wasn't easy (usually, with one or two exceptions).

I did a little googling on the subject and every page I found has said that it's not easy and that it does require soldering on the mobo. Not only that, but you'll void your warranty.

Don't bother. It's a Mac mini.
If you really want to overclock a Mac, get a Quicksilver PowerMac G4 and buy a GigaDesigns or OWC processor upgrade for it. You can overclock those using jumper blocks on the processor upgrade card. |
