Okay. Deep breath.

I have a new 12" iBook G4, and a HP PeeCee running Windows 98 SE. I also have an ethernet cable running betwixt the two. In system preferences (on the iBook), internet connectoin sharing is set to share my dial-up connection over ethernet. Then why won't the PeeCee log onto the network?

Notice that I posted this on a Mac forum (not windows), because you people tend to be a sharper bunch.

In System Preferences > Sharing, turn the firewall completely OFF.

Reboot both machines, just for good measure.

Yes, I did, but how do I set the whole thing up?

Please forgive me, I haven't really had experience with networking. All I know is that I have an iBook, peecee (windows 98), and ethernet cable, and I want the 2 computers to talk to each other.

IIRC, all you have to do is go into System Prefs -> Sharing -> Internet tab, and click the "Start" button under Internet Sharing.

Yes, I did that on the iBook (suprisingly simple). Now how do I set up Windows 98 to connect to my little network?

Thanks,

Chris

Okay, I just set up some basic file-sharing by assigning IP addresses and using FTP. Now, how do I share the internet connection to the peecee?

Set the IP address of the iBook's ethernet to 192.168.1.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

Set the IP address of the PC to 192.168.1.2, subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and Default gateway to 192.168.1.1 (You iBook is the default route for all IP traffix to the pc)

Enable inet connection sharing on the iBook as you described in your first post.

It's been a long time since I used 98 so you'll have to figure out how to set the ip details yourself. (the "winipcfg" command rings a bell tho')

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

IIRC, it's waaaay harder than it should be. The 'winipcfg' command lets you check the configured IP, subnet, and default gateway. In order to change those, I think you have to right click the network thing -> properties ->TCP/IP -> LAN connection -> another properties button. Then you have to change the numbers and restart the computer.

Note: Don't blame me if that string of actions doesn't work. It should be some combination of those, but I'm not quite sure...

Well, I did as told, and it worked fine for about 10 minutes.
Then the hard drive crashed.

No kidding.

The computer was old enough to vote, and only windows was on it, so I'm not upset or anything.

From now on, I'm sticking to my iBook.
