Obviously the announcement of Apple's streaming service, launch date, shows, etc. Maybe some info on the premium News service (which, admittedly I haven't been following the news of)? Not likely, but maybe some hardware like new iPads?
The rumors of a new iPad mini has me pretty excited, but this is probably going to be a software/service show and I'm not really looking to add another subscription to my list. If Apple bundles Music and TV together for $9.99 I may bite, depending on the offerings. Spotify just announced that they'd be bundling Hulu with their Premium plan (also $9.99), so maybe they know something that we don't? So it goes. |

I'm half excited for Apple's streaming service. It appears they may be headed for some family friendly content, which I think is needed amongst the violence/sex plagued services. It will offer Apple a competitive advantage—not for those who want violence and sex, but for families who do not. And believe me, there is plenty of demand for that, especially in our porn/mass-shooter driven world.
The other half of me knows that Apple is biased toward one political party over another and much of that "family friendly" content will likely have deep political undertones, which I despise regardless of political leaning. That aside, I would love to see Apple enter the space to provide good competition in a market deeply in need of further disruption. However, my desire to enter will depend greatly on the price. We currently get all of our streaming content from Netflix and Amazon Prime, with Netflix making up the vast majority. There will be previews of upcoming content, presentations from Hollywood knuckleheads not named Kevin Spacey or Harvey Weinstein (or Lori Laughlin for that matter). Lots of big shots will dance on stage, singing the tunes of their superior content message. The diversity prerequisite will show how much Apple cares about media pressure, and there will be much talk of user privacy*. As far as hardware is concerned, look for a new iPad Mini ($249) and a new iPad ($299). Neither will be spectacular updates, with Apple concerning themselves more with price than feature set. These will be pushed as distribution vehicles for the new streaming service. There will be an enhanced TV app, or possibly a new Media app that combines Apple Music and Apple [video] into one thing. iMacs and Mac Pros are reserved for WWDC, so don't expect to see any of that. Otherwise, meh. *Service not available in China. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. There are plenty of free avenues to follow. Netflix, Amazon, Apple, etc. do not need to add to it. There are several Netflix originals that I absolutely love, but I get tired of seeing the show fall into the old "show some boobs" trick while I'm sitting with my wife just trying to watch a show with her. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. Apple updated iPads today.
@709 - The new iPad Mini looks like something good (finally). A bit like an iPhone Xr with an 8" screen. 64GB A12 Bionic Retina Display 8mp camera Apple Pencil support $399 Looks like your cup of cider! — What they did with the iPad Air is simply … Amazing! What they did, you see, now get this, amazing! What they did is (wowzers), you see, they took the iPad Pro 10.5", removed 2 speakers, updated the processor, lowered the price, and (tsk tsk) renamed it "iPad Air". Unbelievable! The creative genius is incredible! It's a better price point, but otherwise it's a product I just can't find a customer for. I don't know. I guess for another $170 (over the iPad) you get a slightly bigger screen with a faster refresh rate and a better processor. — The new Mini is a good update, and long overdue. The thing is finally something worth stocking, again. The new Air is, well, underwhelming. It's just a rebranded 2nd generation iPad Pro with a lower price. The thing is, the base iPad still does everything the new iPad Air does, but with a slower processor. Granted, the screen is better (a lot better?) and there is a pretty big difference in the processor. However, it kind of sits in the same space as the 2017 13" MacBook Pro. It's just not "better" enough. The 2018 iPad is so good at its price it's hard to justify anything else unless you're a creative, and then the 2018 iPad Pro is so much better that you are better off springing for it than settling for the middle ground. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. There is more different from the iPad Air and old iPad Pro though. The camera is one thing that really stands out to me. I have a camera bump and there is no bump on the new one. So it looks like they took the guts of the Pro and stuck it in the old Air case.
Also, I just ordered my wife the new mini. She needs and update and this is just the ticket. I was really expecting more, but at least it has the power to last for a long time. Apple Pencil 2 uses induction charging. That, by itself, is the separator. I have to assume that, technically speaking, this is not so easy to integrate as it might seem. Doing it right is expensive*. Also, it is a feature separator between the lower priced iPads and the iPad Pro.
I'm guessing this has to do with logic board design. The new iPad Air is just the old 10.5" iPad Pro with all of its tech, including lightning, Touch ID, etc. Quote:

Apple is going to retain their margins, and that means waiting for the technology to come down in price before it is implemented in entry designs. Touch Bar and Face ID are the two best examples of that tech. Also, there is the possibility that Apple considered what you are asking, but decided they simply could not keep up with demand if they implemented Face ID into these new devices. It is possible that they cannot produce enough [Face ID cameras] and still be able to meet demand for iPhone X, iPad Pro, and a host of new iPads. I was editing as I went along. * Yes, I know Samsung added induction chargers to their new phones (all expensive). Yeah, it feels like they can never let a line-up rest and feel just right. Why do both the iPad and iPad Air exist?…is the new why do both the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro without Touch Bar exist. (Answer, apparently: to hit certain price points.)
Why is the Pencil 1 required for the two newest iPads? Why is the Pencil 2 required for just the iPad Pro, but also only for the most recent generation? (Answer appears to be technical mumbo-jumbo nobody cares about. It boils down to bad marketing.) It’s a mess. Which is unfortunate, because by themselves, these are good products. Why isn’t anyone taking the bird’s eye’s view and figuring out how they fit in a grander strategy, though? |

There does seem to be some sort of disconnect at Apple when it comes to certain product lines. Both iPad and Mac have various systems that serve no real purpose other than to fill a price slot. I suppose Apple hopes people will say something like, "I have X dollars to spend. What can I get?" and an untrained Apple sales person will say, "oh, get this. It's right in your price range."
There are two laptops in the lineup that make no sense, and there is one iPad in the lineup that makes no sense. iPads, even more than Macs, fit into a simple argument: Either you need the power and should get an iPad Pro, or you don't and should get an iPad. The Air fills a price gap, but not a needs gap. It makes very little sense to me other than serving as a corporate up-sell. The lineup for both Mac and iPad should be simple: Pro, and not pro. The "air" moniker is only confusing things. I was glad when Apple dropped the name from the iPad, but they just had to bring it back. I suppose because it sounds "thin and light". Except that there are both thinner and lighter in both Mac and iPad lineups. It should just be "Pro" and "Everything else". 3 sizes to choose from. Move along now. 12" MacBook 14" MacBook 16" MacBook 12" MacBook Pro 14" MacBook Pro 16" MacBook Pro iPad Mini iPad iPad Maxi iPad Mini Pro iPad Pro iPad Maxi Pro Simple lineup. Choose whether or not you need power or not, then choose a screen size. If you "need" a pro model for solitaire, I'll be happy to sell it to you. Just give me the option. I regularly sell 15" MacBook Pros to customers who need an Air but want a larger screen. Having to pay $1200 for a larger screen is silly. Same goes with iPads. There used to be a very distinct "Pro" line, and a very distinct "consumer" line. Those lines no longer exist. It is becoming confusing for the customer, which is no good. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. We are smart, educated, capable, and helpful. New Air: Last year's 10.5" Pro: Edit: oh...8MP vs. 12MP You know, it actually makes sense that it would have a low end camera. I don't understand Apple's desire to get into the content business. What an incredible waste of their incredible fortune and success. They could be doing things to change the world, and instead they are producing a shitty show with Jennifer Aniston.

Like all businesses, Apple is in the business of making money. Even non-profits exist for the purpose of making money (they just hide it behind a tax shield). Each of us has a job solely for the purpose of making money, and each of us will jump at the opportunity to make more.
Each of us is going to pay someone to deliver content to us, whether that is Google, Amazon, Netflix, Disney, or Apple. Each of these companies has its fingers in more than one pie, yet everyone gets a free pass except for Apple. "Apple should only make computers." Well, Google should only do search, Amazon should just sell books, Netflix should just rent DVD's, and Disney should just make cute animated cartoons. Each of these companies are what they are because they invested capital, took risks, and expanded their offerings. Otherwise, Apple would still just be the "Macintosh Company" and they would be gone. Bring on the content. Maybe it will suck, maybe it won't. However, I will bet my bottom dollar that some folks will say it sucks even if they produce some of the best shows on the planet. - AppleNova is the best Mac-users forum on the internet. I don’t think anyone here feels that Apple shouldn’t make money. People who work hard earn what they have, and Apple worked hard to get where it is. But what now? They really haven’t done much as of late to earn it. I think some of it is how they make money and why. A company that exist just amass vast sums of money for the sake of further enriching super wealthy stockholders just turns me off as a customer. I feel that way about other companies as well, so don’t just say we are attacking Apple.

I feel like Apple's TV moves are also setting itself up to deliver some pretty unique viewing experiences in the not-too-distant future (if you're in the Apple ecosystem). I could totally see them releasing an AR headset or glasses and creating TV content that takes advantage of that. I mean, 3D is one thing, but content that maps to the room you're in? Imagine, in the comfort of your own home, watching a Jordan Peele horror series w/ your glasses on. Now imagine that that thing is not on your screen anymore but crawling on the floor towards you. Many, many pants will be shat.
So it goes. |

And I don't really get your comparison with Netflix. Netflix has really stayed in their "lane".... with the major shift being producing their own content instead of just licensing it. But, they dont make hardware or have a hundred other side businesses. They are trying to produce the greatest streaming entertainment option for a set price per month. Pretty simple really. Apple? Not so simple. |
