I might be interested. How does the FTP portion of this work? Let's say I was working on a project where I wanted to give a couple business partners access to short video clips I was making... to get them into the Dropbox web UI I assume there is some analogous upload process the first time around, and then I give the people access to the URL and make it private to everyone else / not visible online via searches, etc. Can that be done?

No, there is no "upload" per say. What you get is a folder called "DropBox". Anything you put in there gets uploaded to the central server automatically.

You can then share that folder ether with other DropBox users, or just using your own account on another machine. Whenever the file is changed, any other "subscribers" to that folder will automatically receive the updated version.

The web front end is like a bonus. For every file in your DropBox you can go and get a unique URL that you can give to people. This only alows them to see that file (and possibly, just that revision)

OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available!

Can someone PM me a link or whatever I need to get in (I assume once in I'll get some ability to invite others too? Otherwise I'll need 2 "seats")... thanks in advance!

I took a quick look at this and it seems interesting. Does anyone know if there's a monthly bandwidth limit and, if so, what it is? I often need to share some rather large PDF files, which this looks like it might be good for. But I don't want to use it if 10 downloads will use up my monthly allotment and force me into some "premium" tier. Thanks very much.

There's no "premium" tier. As far as I can tell, it's unlimited downloads. I've transferred a ton of data to mine and back, and I've had no problems.

If you want an invite, shoot me a PM with your e-mail address.

Does it require a programme installed? I ask because it would be useful for me to go home<>work, but I'm prevented from installing anything at work....

Sort of. There's a Web interface, but it doesn't support automatic syncing. The Web interface is really only useful for downloading files, but not for updating them.

If you install the app, then the files are automatically synced to each computer that has the app installed.

So basically... if I'm collaborating with another person and we sync up the files in a specific folder... those aren't actually going online (like a .Mac) but rather just using the internet to sync up from one computer to the other?

No, the files are on a server. When you sync, you get the files from there. You can share individual files too with direct links.
