Hey

I was wondering if i can play a dvd on my laptop and have the sound go through airtunes to my sound system and speakers?

No. Firstly only iTunes can output sound wirelessly to Airport Express. Secondly, iTunes only exports sound for "conventional" music files. So for example, you can import a Quicktime movie into iTunes and play the soundtrack, but if you then switch to wireless speakers, the sound will cut out.

If anyone else has a solution to this, I'd love to hear it.

I wonder why they can't make Airtunes support system sound and not just iTunes. Too much lag?
(and in that case, they should add the support in QT and DVD Player IMO.)

Yes, I'd guess it's because of lag. Even a few milliseconds of lag when watching a movie would be jarring.

You can't do this right now, but it's not impossible. You'd have to write an audio output plug in (copy paste DVD Jons code for a head start) for VLC and delay the visuals by 100ms or so.
