*Three-year mega bump*

At the moment, the top 7 in All Topics on Digg are all about Scientology. Why the sudden interest?

I dunno but I want to believe this blurb that Will Smith is NOT, in fact, turning to Scientology.

http://www.usmagazine.com/node/13674

Or his wife (not as clear on that). I am at a point with Cruise's mania and wack-job behavior, that I'll never pay a dime to watch one of his films again, knowing where the money is going. If it's on HBO or TNT, fine, otherwise no. I wouldn't pay to watch Smith's either, if it turned out that way. Life is too short to give your hard-earned money to pyramid scheme cults posing as religions.

Hell, it's too short to give it to the standard religions too, for that matter. Just go to Charity Navigator, pick your best cause and send it there.

Hum-de-dum...one of the main HQ's for the CoS is just down the street from where I work. Huge complex. They even managed to get a street named after L. Ron there. The people seem perfectly normal. It's just every so often they turn their huge parking lot into a tent for some kind of revivalist thing.

Big sign out front that exhorts you to read "Dianetics" because 21 million other asshats have read it. And also tries to get you to come in for a free stress test.

They are surrounded by a huge Kaiser Permanente complex, the Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles and Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Wonder if they set up HQ on purpose to take advantage of people in distress?

Further down the street is the "Citizen's Commission on Human Rights" which runs the "Psychiatry: An Industry of Death Museum". I'm not kidding, they have a whole museum dedicated to "exposing" psychiatry as a killer. This has the CoS stamped alllllllllllll over it.

Umm...yeah...

Specialists are people who know more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing. Generalists are people who know less and less about more and more until they know nothing about everything. I'm somewhere in the middle.

Not sure about anything today, but about a week ago (or roughly a year ago in "Internet time") some Scientology propaganda starring Tom Cruise was leaked and fawned over by all the major media outlets.

What is this anonymous group, and why is everyone on digg getting so excited about them? Sounds like a bunch of geeks who want to scare people. Sad really.

Well, if you had read the topics you'd know that:

The Tom Cruise video that leaked a week or so ago made a pretty big impression on the "internet community."*
A group of "hackers" called "Anon"** have launched Denial of Service attacks on all of Scientology's websites, phone lines and fax lines.
Someone claiming to represent "Anon" has released a number of portentous videos on YouTube saying that they intend to "dismantle" Scientology.

It's actually pretty interesting, assuming you don't care about either side's position (I don't): A largish, rich organisation, unafraid to fight dirty if they need to, vs the "crowdsourced" might of the massed opinion of the internet. If the "Anon" people can stop their followers getting bored quickly, they might indeed be able to achieve something pretty amazing in the real world - maybe not their stated aim, but they may be able to cut Scientology off from the 'net for good - and when your organization relies on publicity to gain new funds, that's akin to "winning the air war" - not the final blow, but a very serious weakening.

Interesting times.

* = By "Internet Community" I mean: Something Awful forum goons, 4chan members, ebaumsworld members and related sites, basically.
** = Almost certainly a subset of the people mentioned as "Internet Community", although I suspect that a fair few people care less about the "target" and more about the fact that someone thought of a target for this sort of thing that would have virtually no moral or legal implications.

Nice... Anonymous in the house.

See if you want to give this asshole money after watching this.

PS - Chanology is Anonymous' "religion" thereby giving them the same legal protections as Scientology, etc. Sweet.

More Good times.

Thread split since the recent events have little to do with the old thread.

Wow I didn't know Tom was so instrumental in helping right after 9/11, AND partners with the US Department of Education, NASA and more!

http://711chan.org/ (Ironic that it is down today!!)

That is supposed to be one of the more well known meeting places for 'them'.
Other than that a whole load of IRC channels.

Basically they are a 'group' who go around hacking sites for sport.
What they appear to be loosely trying to do now is get an internet movement kick started against scientology.
I look at them rather like a delinquent child of the internet population, and right now I am glad they have found a reasonable target outlet for their teenage angst.

It's a bit like your troubled child discovering that he / she likes eating mud at the bottom of the garden.. If they were torturing small animals and running the streets naked at night then this latest fad is one to be encouraged rather than criticized! Personally I am all for them taking Scientology down.. but wonder how long it will be before they get bored of the target..

Here is the wiki page concerning this movement. Be prepared to loose some brain cells by reading it, but the movement overall is interesting.

It will be the first real true test to see if the internet can bridge the gap between the virtual and physical world.

There should be a version of Celebrity Death Match based on this.
