Not to bash or anything, but I don't use Safari, and I don't want it in the dock.

But everytime I reboot, there it is again at the top of my Dock??!!??

I can't find anything that will let me make that stop.

Anybody got a clue???

thanks,

rob

Quit Safari.
Drag it off of the Dock.

Does this not work?

Nope!

Everytime I reboot, there it is again!

I have looked, and looked. Can't find anything to turn this off!

How very odd. Okay, let's try tinkering with the Dock's preference file. Maybe it has somehow been corrupted or permissions on it are hosed or something.

1. Go to your home/Library/Preferences folder and move the file named "com.apple.dock.plist" to your desktop or the trash, just out of the Library.
2. Log out.
3. Log back in.
4. Your Dock should now have reverted to the default settings. Add and remove icons as you see fit and set any other preferences you like.
5. Reboot.

After going through these steps, does Safari or anything else still keep reinserting itself in the Dock?

Best of luck,
Brad

Are you an admin, or is there another admin user on your system? They might have set up your Dock this way.

Just me on my 14inch iBook.

I do use Dock fun, but have since 10.1.whatever with no problems like this.

I will check on those preferences asap and report back.

Ok, I am sure that it is Dock Fun causing the problem. But I have no idea what in Dock Fun is making this happen!

I trashed the Dock prefs, and the Dock Fun prefs. Still had the Safari Icon showing up after a reboot. I then turned off the pref that starts Dock Fun at Start up, and this stopped the Safari Icon from showing up in my Dock! Went back to Dock fun starting at start up, and the Safari Icon is back again after a reboot!!??!!

So, for the short term, I will just keep Dock Fun out of my start up sequence and write the folks over at Dock Fun to ask for a fix.

Very strange I say!!

thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

The answer is simple....

If you look in the /Library/Preferences folder of your boot drive (where "default preferences" for applications often are) you will find a file named com.apple.dockfixup.plist.

That is the file responsible for putting Safari back in your Dock. Because when you pull your user preference file, and the OS goes to recreate a new one it loads the info from com.apple.dockfixup.plist into your new preference file.

Pull this out of the /Library/Preferences folder long enough for your new user preference file to get built without it and you should be fine.
